WHY is that a problem? Doesn't the cream rise to the top?

Some kids Peter are pushed to the top by their parents wealth and connections at the expence of kids who have more ability but do not have the connections. How many of our high court judges did not go to public school :?:

They still have to do it. I don't see what the problem is? If Labour hadn't bowed to the Trade Unions talking the way you are, maybe Labour wouldn't have tried to bring everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

At the end of the day, the brightest get to the top (except in politics) so just accept it and make sure that your kids get the best advice they can, then they might grow up without the chip on their shoulder.

I'm not sure that's necessarily the case. Public schools teach their pupils to be articulate and socially confident. They are also able to have small classes and, usually, inspiring teachers. This tends to make for plenty of attention for each pupil and less chance for disruption, at least in class! Many of these pupils are not 'bright' in the accepted academic sense, they have just benefited from the sort of education that most of my generation were fortunate enough to receive in the state sector.

Errmmm??? I don't think I said that! I know from personal experience that social confidence and being able to articulate your thoughts well gives you entree to many places. However, never assume that any of those people are clever or know a lot about anything, they don't, they just 'talk the talk'. Some of them are thick as 2 short planks but can talk for hours on any subject without knowing anything about it!

I agree Silverlady

What I wont is people to have an equal chance, i.e someone from Warrington who did not go to public school to become a high court judge, At the moment it will not happen as they all seem to have gone to one or two public schools on to oxbridge and a few hand shakes latter bobs your uncle. The higher ranks of the army are the same, you can only get so far without a public school education :!:

The implication being that Public schools are better then.

There will always be a class system.

There will always be rich people, hard working rich people, middle classes, and less well-off. The latter can be there by choice if they only see being subsidised by the state as the way to go.

That's the way of the world, so live with it and help your neighbour.

If you are happy with your lot, get on with it.

If you are not happy, do something about it instead of whingeing and being jealous.

There should be equality of opportunity, as there used to be in the Grammar school system. Pupils came from a wide range of backgrounds, all there on merit. Not all pupils went on to university, only those who wanted to do academic study for a particular chosen career and I also remember that there were only one or two each year who applied for Oxbridge. However, the opportunities were there for all.

I believe it is the current state school system that prevents the opportunities for those best suited, by implying that everyone can go to university when it clearly isn't right for some.

Gret post Silver Lady. As a relative failure at Grammar School I

should take the opposite view, but the chances were there for everyone. In my class, there were more from council housing estates and run down areas than from "better" districts.

What 'progress' has done to the education system, in my view, is shameful.

Happy days

It's principally the champagne socialist luvvies dogma, that University is everything - hence a dumbed down system, with mickey mouse subjects to get as many through as poss. It's also the view, that someone with a Uni education is somehow of more value - when imo every single specialisation that contributes to our overall level of civilization should be viewed with equal respect - " he who serves his country most, serves me best".

In the old days maybe, but for the last 20 years these people have been found wanting as they have NO life experience. (A bit like MPs) We used to run rings around the Uni grads.

It is the old school tie network that needs getting rid of, Their are alot of people around who are qualified to be high court judges, as their alot of people in the army qualified and able to move high up in the ranks. But they do not get the opportunity. And in the army when you complain about it you are sacked.
