inky pete
But that's the point, BMI doesn't measure obesity at all - but the health facists have been using it to define obesity. Pulse rate differential would at least indicate whether or not a particular person's health was at risk, regardless of their weight and bodyshape.[/u]
Dizzy
Inky's right there Obs A fit and healthy athlete or muscle man can be classed as being 'obese' simply because of their height/weight ratio... a point which has already been mentioned a few times on this thread However, as Evils has also pointed out, having a low pulse does not necessarily mean you are exceptionally fit either. So which category do you fall into
observer
OBsessing again Diz. Fitness can be tested by pulse rate check prior to, and following a circuit training session. Most would discover that they arn't as fit as they thought; but not being "fit" doesn't necessarilly mean unhealthy, at least not in the short term. I certainly don't support BMI, but excess fat (not muscle) can be identified and measured.
Sue Durnim
People should be intelligent enough to make their own minds up instead of being manipulated by the state on how best to look after their own health and beiing told what is fat and what degree someone is called obese. I see lots of people gong to gyms, running for miles around the streets to kep fit. How many times do you read in the paper a person dies from a heart attack playing squash etc. I know one thing, I would rather die being ill, than to die fit and healthy! observer
As they say, "if yer name's on the bullet, your dead; and there ain't nothing yer can do about it" - they've now located a "fat" gene and are promising an anti-obesity pill - meanwhile, over-population is causing misery to millions - funny old world.
