P J
The Bullingdon Club is a socially exclusive student dining club at Oxford University. The club has no permanent rooms and is notorious for its members' wealth and destructive binges. [1] Membership is by invitation only, and prohibitively expensive for most, given the need to pay for the uniform, dinners and damages Rather apt given the recent student "High Jinks" as some may term it. Seems to me if your family is rich enough to recompense the injured party then whats the problem old bean. you see what they do is get bladdered and then destroy wherever they happen to be at the time. Rather like the idiots from yesterday except the Bullingdon Club yobs include Cameron, Gideon Osbourne, Boris Johnson and several other highly placed politicians. And for the record Baz , Blair or anyone of his social standing wou;ld NEVER be invited into the Bullingdon Club, thats for the special folk. Bazj
Keith Moon was a rich bloke but from a poor background and he had destructive tendencies..... He came from Wembley!! Being destructive isn't a reserve of the rich; as was demonstrated yesterday
Dizzy
The unfortunate outcome of yesterday is that not once has the actual matter of rising student fees been mentioned on the tv or in the papers since.....
asperity
I'm not really sure what point PJ is trying to make except that if rich students damage property, then pay damages afterwards (because they are rich) this is bad, but if poor students damage property then don't pay damages this is somehow good. Surely bad behaviour should not be tolerated regardless of the perpetrators bank balance

observer
This debate is interesting, if we remember a similar topic on the G20 rioting where the Police were prepared and were accused of brutality - the Police it seems can't win - and Joe Public appears to want it both ways. Mobs riot - that's what they do - and when they do, the State requires an effective counter to protect the rest of us and public property. SO, if we wish to continue with these futile tantrums in the name of "freedom"; and to ensure they are "controlled"; folk really have to accept that the State's yard dogs need to be unleashed. P J
Asperity if you look my "point" was in reply to the ridiculously pompous post by Egbert rather than to the student riots question in general. He seems to think that anyone in a suit or with rich parents is well behaved or somehow more deserving of a decent education and/or job but if you are from a poorer background, higher education is above your head as well as now above your means. Best get used to riots though, I remember the last time the Tories were in, riots in every major city in the country. Lets hope I'm wrong though . Bash over
observer
Fear your right, and such disorder will only feed a desire for a "strong man" to take over with a "whiff of grapeshot".
asperity
Unfortunately the Tories aren't "in". What we have in government now is a mish mash of socialists and green liberals who are trying to put right the 13 years of idiocy that sailed under the flag of NuLiebour. We are ruled by a load of unelected bureaucrats in Brussels and what they want "call me Dave" leaps to obey. The rioters may have a point, but on this occasion they are directing their ire in the wrong direction. However I don't recomend they try to protest against our masters in Belgium unless they are prepared for a real fight with real violence and water cannon. Peter T
Isn't Westminster like a toy factory production line? As they come off the end, (out of Uni), they are labelled for a job and every few years given a colour, red, yellow or blue. Then minimum training programs installed, and lo and behold you have your future cabinet members. Clueless and out of touch, but all from the same mould.
