observer
A face you can recognise as "the Council", someone to vent your spleen on? Well. it seems the Council are consulting the public on the issue, but you have to be quick, the consultation closes on 18th Oct.
Peter T
Seems that the council don't want someone to be in charge. He/she might make them do the job properly. Makes sense to give it a go, this system that we have isn't working. Can it be any worse?
Gary
The story in question is here ! http://www.warrington-worldwide.co.uk/articles/9014/1/No-appetite-for-elected-Mayor/Page1.html
observer
perhaps you could run a poll ?
Gary
perhaps you could run a poll ? You mean you haven't worked out how to do it yourself?
robocop
Isn't the existing Mayor elected by his peers?
vic
From the news story: "The council will pass a resolution to adopt the appropriate new executive arrangements on November 1 and they will come into force three weeks after the local elections in May." That should be three days. Apart from the reduced number of executive members, I'm not sure there's much to the idea of appointing the leader for four years. The nominee for leader would come from the majority party, whose elected councillors could vote (behind doors) to change leader (and if a defeated leader didn't stand down, they could probably face discipline and expulsion from the party). harry hayes
An elected mayor - with power to act - can only be a good thing. Happy days
observer
The Councillors won't want an "elected" Mayor, it might upset their comfort zone. So IF folk want it. I believe you need a petition of 5% (or is it 15%) 0f registered voters, in order to require the Council to conduct a referendum - so folks, balls in your court! wahl
why should anyone be given four years in the job? who still trusts a politician?
observer
Some currently get 4 years .
observer
Well folks, it appears no one was interested in how their Council is run - according to wwnews - no one responded to the consultation on their constitutional changes. Dizzy
Well most people wouldn't have known what it was about anyway... if indeed they actually knew a consultation was being carried out. As it was instigated by the former bods in charge how come local Labour lot didn't plug it and spead the word a bit more
observer
Cos they too, have an interest in the status quo - cosy etc. Seems apathy was the winner.
Charles_Dickens
Surely an elected Mayor - not connected to any political party would be the best solution for this town of ours
Dizzy
I agree Sadly though those in power (both past and present) obviously wouldn't like the control to be taken away from them
