AlisonF,

Do you buy your eggs and milk loose? :D

Question about your compost bin though..

I presume you put waste food in it too so doesn't it start to smell as it all rots away especially in summer?

Do you find it attracts rats like my friends neighbours does?

You do have to be a bit careful with compost bins, don't put any animal or dairy products in them but they're find for a good mix of veg waste, plant waste, some grass cuttings etc and I put a fair bit of cardboard in also. If you put meat in then you're almost certain to get rats etc. In summer it's best to bury any fruit under the top layer as otherwise you'll attract fruit flies but at this time of year it's not a problem. If you want to compost meat stuff you need a bokashi bin which is totall different but they're a bit more specialist and I'm not 100% sure of them at the moment!
