Bazj Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 It seems that the Popes visit to the UK in September, will end up costing the British taxpayer an additional ?4 million on top of the ?8 million they originally guessed it would cost. (I say guessed because no one can possibly work to any degree of logic and come up with such a wildly out of the ball park figure as that!!) The now revised cost of ?12 million does not include the costs of policing (and we all know how the cops love those overtime claims!!) In these days of austerity and as generally no one seems to believe in god anymore, should we be asked to foot the bill for an ex german WW2 anti aircraft gunner who just happens to wear a white frock and a big pointy hat, or should the Vatican foot the bill; especially with all the money they have Quote
Peter T Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 The latter. He could walk here as a pilgrimage and set a carbon footprint example to save the world. Quote
Sue Durnim Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 The Popes visit. As a believer in God, the visit by the Pope to this land of ours will be worth every single penny. I for one will be glad to see him here. Quote
wolfie Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 Also as a believer in God, it won't matter one jot to me if the Pope comes here or stays at home being pampered. Leaving to one side the cost involved, the only benefit I can see in him coming is possibly to remind muslims that this is still a Christian country. Quote
asperity Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 As a taxpayer I believe he should pay for it out of church funds. After all I contributed enough to them when I was younger and gullible Quote
safeway56 Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 Henry VIII had the right idea regarding the Pope. He freed us from the yoke of Rome...A true English hero. Quote
Legion Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 phew...this is a close debate...no need to post my reasons here..SOLD! Quote

harry hayes Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 Oscar Wilde said we know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. We seem to fall more and more into that category these days - (I speak as a non catholic).Elsewhere people were saying they wouldn't pay the 67p annually which the queen costs them. Happy days Quote
Peter T Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 When the Vatican insist that people shouldn't use condoms, how can they be taken seriously? It's time to move on and catch up with the real world. Quote
observer Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 Can they be taken seriously for believing that a bloke was killed on a cross, then rose from the dead?! Quote
Legion Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 The Popes visit. As a believer in God, the visit by the Pope to this land of ours will be worth every single penny. I for one will be glad to see him here. What has the pope got to do with God? The vatigan is a sub-politcial influence that used fear and intimidation to grow into what was the worlds largest financial institution until people started to realise the hypicritical organisation abused thier power, hid unlawful activities, influenced kings & politicians, were influenced by money. As a beleiver in God myself Catholocism on its organisational level is abhoration. (not an attack on the poor sap catholics born and bred into this farce, thay are the victims who need protection the most). Quote
observer Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 Same with all institutions, their maintainance and survival become and end in themselves. Quote

There is alot of people who can not get to Rome for one reason or another and can see no reason why he should not come here. Quote

I don't think they are against him coming here if thats what floats yer boat. I just think they would prefer he used Easyjet! Quote
Egbert Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 YOU might as well ask if it is a waste of taxpayers' money when ANY overseas visitor comes who requires security, etc. Or indeed when our own Queen, Prime Minister, any member of the Royal Family, Government Minister, etc, etc, ever goes anywhere. Was it a waste of money when the England football team went to South Africa? In fact, you might as well question the value of anyone going anywhere now that video conferencing is available, etc. And you might as well question the value of people flying abroad, or coming here, on holiday, given the cost of all the security measures now deemed to be necessary. Why don't we all sit at home and save money - ours and the nation's. Quote
Eagle Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 Don't try to cloud the issue , the tax payer expects to pay for the security around our "important people", most foreign high profile figures provide their own security. My gripe is having to pay for some old bloke in a frock coming on his jollies. I acknowledge that he is an important person in the lives of some of our residents, fair enough they will be willing to pay. I can imagine what Muslim tax payers think of paying the bill. Quote

There is alot of people who can not get to Rome for one reason or another and can see no reason why he should not come here. Not a good reason. I liked Elvis, but I probably wouldn't have gone to London to watch him. I support the Queen, but I don't need to go to see her. Given what has been happening in the church these last few decades, and nothing done to stop it, I am amazed that he has the audacity to show his face. Quote
Lt Kije Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 I'm not a great fan of the Roman church, it is backward thinking Quote
Bazj Posted July 7, 2010 Author Report Posted July 7, 2010 Was it a waste of money when the England football team went to South Africa? Of course it bloody well was Quote
Lt Kije Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 I think anyone would find it hard to argue against Baz's last post Quote
asperity Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 For once I have to agree with you LtKije. There's a first time for everything! Quote
