I missed this film about illegal aliens in London when it was released. Now on DVD I find it's an extremely literate and interesting take on the problem. Of course the writer makes the main character a saint and the female lead a virgin -- so it's easier to sympathize with their plight. Very good cinema. Excellent writing and casting. A must see for anyone with a conscience.

I think that's why I passed it originally. Some critic said it's about illegals having it prostitute themselves. There was only one of them in the story and I don't think she was illegal. Just using the Baltic Hotel for her business.

My grandson (age 19) brought the DVD to study film technique. All the characters were foreigners -- the exploiters and the victims. My grandson said near the end "I didn't see one white Brit in the whole movie!"
