observer
The Neurembourg defence offered by the chief Nazis, but dismissed by the Allied prosecutors - well, a recent French experiment, where contestants in a fake TV show, were encouraged to administer up to 450V on an actor when he failed to answer a question correctly, seems to indicate that around 80% of us would "follow orders" to the point of killing someone. The contestants encouraged by the authority figures of a TV quiz host and egged on by a TV audience (equally oblivious to the fact that the actor's screams of pain and eventual death, were just acting); went all the way with the juice button - scary?! How would you react?

LymmParent
I'm English, Obs. I don't eat snails, I don't eat frogs and I don't regard a hole in the ground as a usable lavatory. I would behave properly.
observer
This experiment was based on one that took place in the USA many decades ago; with similar results: so nationality doesn't make folk immune from a similar reaction - in fact, given the ovine nature of the British, the level of conformity may even be higher! Evil Sid
if it was one our esteemed politicians i bet they would not get the chance to answer the question rightly or wrongly before the button was pressed  puts me in mind of that simpsons episode where the whole family was wired up and ended up causing a blackout
observer
Seems to be a role playing scenario; the supreme victims of the Holocaust, appear now to be the supreme perpetrators.

LymmParent
How can you be a supreme victim? Â If somebody beat you savagely with a chicken breast that still had the wing bone attached, I think you'd qualify.....

observer
Just responding to Eagle's semantics as usual.
Eagle
Not semantics, just despair at your using "supreme" as an adjective with "victim". Â Supreme champion is fine but supreme victim is not. IMHO of course.

Paul Kennedy
Back to the original post, I deplore such programmes....and there was me thinking that the French were such a cultured society.
observer
It was an experiment in human behaviour and demonstrates that, in certain situations, most folk will defer to authority and be capable of doing anything - even murder! LymmParent
Orit demonstrates that most folk know that telly isn't actually real? Egged on by a game show host, with an audience, who is going to really believe that pain and death may occur?
observer
Other experiments, like the one where two groups were divided into captives and captors; evolved into gratuitous cruelty by the captors - human nature is a strange thing - but folk don't really know what most are capable of, given the right circumstances. LymmParent
That latter one is about accountability and mob mentality. Humans will do whatever they think they can get away with, or whatever they think others aregetting away with. There are not many people who won't abuse power if it's given to them. Even I make the kids clean the car, bath the dog and perform various other menial chores just because I can!!

observer
Let's face it LP; given the lack of any moral or political conviction on the part of the majority of folk; we are all; susceptable to the dictates of authority. LymmParent
Self-preservation. Basic, nasty, selfish - and key to the survival and proliferation of our species. Safety in numbers, pass the buck, don't rock the boat - take your pick of the justifications. As you're so fond of saying, bedrock ovine, most people.
