Bill
Talking of dodgey web sites and dodgey software, do you remember when someone here posted a link that instantly transformed WWW into a porn site. Funniest thing I?d seen in years but needless to say didn?t go down too well with Gary. The hosting company got shut down but it was funny while it lasted. Oh and by the way Mike. it'd take more than beer goggles to make us two look like lads! Welding goggles and a white stick mabe Bill

Primedius
Firewall's are very limited in their ability to determine what is malicious and what is friendly. It is up to the operator of the firewall to decide. Correct KeithR, It doesn't matter how good the firewall, one wrong click from the user and the PC will be open to attack. I'm not aware that there is any antivirus that will detect ALL virus's. Some are better than others of course. As wolfie said it is important to download Windows updates as these will install patches and security fixes. I wouldn't trust an illegal version of Windows or any other operating system, it has been compomised and will suffer from more attacks than a legal version. Dizzy
As wolfie said it is important to download Windows updates as these will install patches and security fixes. I wouldn't trust an illegal version of Windows or any other operating system, it has been compomised and will suffer from more attacks than a legal version. That's the bit I don't understand as it does now appear that I probably did have an illegal version of XP BUT in all the time I've had it (over 2 years) it has always happily and automatically downloaded and installed all the windows updates. Anyway upshot of my long winded saga is that after buying and external hard drive and backing up all my important files/folders/company info etc etc I ran the malaware software and HIT DELETE button .... Bill and Byrdy will be proud of me All seemed fine... windows had to close and restart.... and then asked me to reactivate Windows ???? Rang Microsoft Support and read out the 25 digit code to them and the Indian bloke just said 'IT'S NOT VALID'...... end of story.... he was the most unhelpful and uncaring person I have ever had the misfortune to speak to in my life. Maybe his lack of English wasn't helping the situation I was more than happy to have to pay microsoft for a valid product key or whatever was needed etc etc but he just said 'go back to who you bought it off' even though I said that was not possible What a complete and utter to**er he was... and I deal with people every day and rarely get rattles by idiots They should remove the word SUPPORT from their 0800 phone line service Anyway I wont bore you all with the rest but I no longer have my pc and there is a big empty void where it once sat as even the bloke on Walton Road that Peter mentioned couldn't get it running and he had no luck with Microsoft either...... so it's now being flattened .... and everything on my pc will now have been lost including all my software. THANKS MICROSOFT !!!!! BUT NOT TO WORRY as I did stick to my guns and backed up all my files before pressing delete At least it should be fast when I get it back as there will be nothing at all on it Very impressed with the help from the chap at the Walton Road DCS Computer Shop though and also his prices... maybe microsoft support could take a leaf out of his book and thanks to you all too
Bill
Shame about that but it?s the risk that comes with a dodgey copy. I hope your going to be having words about this with the person that supplied the machine. So tell me Diz, did you actually uncheck I stole windows box before you hit delete because I would have thought leaving that in place wouldn?t have caused this issue. Your now need to decide now whether to buy a new machine or if the hardware is relatively new, just a licence which seem to be selling for about ?80 these days. Just make sure it?s from a reputable source and not your origional bloke.. Bill

Nope as Microsoft must only now have decided that it is apparently a non-genuine product as Microsoft themselves have happily updated and validated it over the past few years and have never advised that it wasn't genuine despite what they SAY on their website. So tell me Diz, did you actually uncheck I stole windows box before you hit delete because I would have thought leaving that in place wouldn?t have caused this issue. I most certainly did Bill.... didn't want you telling me off again for not following orders Your now need to decide now whether to buy a new machine NOT A CHANCE and no decision to make there Bill... my 'beastie' is brill and the only reason I would ever replace it is if all my blue lights all failed It will have simply been reborn back into the fresh, willing and able beastie it once was
