Meritocracy?

Well it seems Dave has adopted the PC positive discrimination, by having women only shortlists for the selection of his MPs. As this is all about numbers rather than merit; perhaps they will finish up with an exact replication of all race, gender and age groups within society - social engineering or what?

So if I read the idea correctly; if you are black, disabled, female or in some otherway not a white male, you are suitably inferior so as to need special treatment in order to achieve a job as an MP?

So where is the democracy in that train of thought? ....."OK chaps, you may have wanted the white ex copper as your MP, but we have too many whitey types in Parliament at the moment so we are letting you have the one legged, black lesbian instead; just to keep things PC you know!!"

Oh My God..... this country really has been taken over by crackpots

It gets worse Baz: they've set quotas for the Police and Fire Brigade - the theory being that their composition should be "representative" of their percentage in society at large - no mention of physical strength or mental ability or even interest in the career; many finish up claiming large amounts of cash on a discrimination case and leave.

So as a (slightly) overweight 40 something, I should be able to join the sea cadets so that they too truly represent the community at large?

Stupid Labour nonsense again. How the bloody hell do these people expect someone in a wheelchair to climb a ladder to put out a fire? Because if they don't employ a wheelchair bound firefighter,, they are breaking the spirit of their own exercise.

Mind you I suppose that is why we have 4ft 6" dolly birds as coppers these days instead of imposing 6ft 5" men

Seems the Tories are now going the way of New Labour, with all women short-lists dictated by Central Office - aside from the obvious patronising "positive discrimination"; motivation seems to be two-fold: 1) to assemble a majority of YES wo/men to suppoert the Party Leadership and 2) provide folk of the requisite intellect to become Gov Ministers, rather than some rustic independent from the sticks. :? Meanwhile, local parties rightly want to choose their candidates on the basis of merit and their representative qualities. Now there is a way of accomodating both desires, by simply modernising Parliament by: allowing local parties to pick their candidates for the Commons (legislature); and by getting rid of the House of Lords, and replacing it with (an Executive) Senate, of 100 members elected on the proportion of votes per Party; from Party lists - sorted.
