Recommended Posts

A Crown Court judge who is on bail after being charged with drink driving has been arrested for a similar offence, police said.

His Honour Bruce Macmillan, 63, was arrested in Hill Street, Liverpool, on Thursday for allegedly being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

The offence is brought against someone who is drunk while sitting in their car but not driving it. The judge, who sits at Liverpool's Crown Court, was already due to appear before magistrates charged with drink driving.

He was first arrested on August 27, after police spotted him driving erratically in his Vauxhall Signum on the M6 in Lancashire.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "A 63-year-old man from Sefton Park has been arrested in Hill Street, Toxteth, for being drunk and in charge of a motor vehicle on Thursday September 17.

"He has been given conditional police bail pending further inquiries."

The judge, who was appointed to the Northern Circuit in 1993, will not be allowed to hear any cases until his own has been dealt with.

If convicted he could lose his ?128,000-a-year job, and be disrobed by the Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor.

He will appear before Chorley magistrates on September 30 to face the original drink driving charge.
