Guest tonymailman
Is music an essential part of life ? different genres of it create different feelings ......... could you live without ever listening to some kind of music ? Peter T
I think that opinion changes throughout your life. When you get past 50, things are less "necessary" and therefore the answer is yes and no.
Evil Sid
probably. these days i don't really notice music as such. it just tends to be a noise in the background. i have the radio on in the car but mainly to drown out the engine noise. i tend to get a bit narked when the music drowns out the conversation on a tv programme. i have nearly every number one from when the charts first started(mostly in mp3 format on my pc) til at least 2002 but very rarely do i deliberatly sit down and actually listen to it. i would more than likely miss it if it wasn't there but until they stop accompanying every event on tv with "mood" music i will never really know. Lt Kije
Music is a very important part of my life, life without it would be alot poorer
observer
Believe some forms of "pop" music were used as a method of torture in Guantanamo?!
Adam
I agree with Peter. As you get older, music and many other things become less essential. I still enjoy music but, these days, have to rely on my own record collection as there is very little of what I call "real music" on the radio or TV. There are one or two specialist programmes and of course Radio 3, but virtually every other station seems to pump out pap all the time. I also agree that "background music" with news and current affairs, documentary programmes, etc has become intrusive.
kateoflymm
I love music and it has always played a very large part in my life. Could I live without it? Well, if it was a case of choosing to live without or die - I'd pick live without. I can always have music "inside my head" though and I can listen, mentally, without any problem, sort of audio-recall. Not as good as hearing externally but better than no music at all. Mary
As long as I can hear - I want music!
Geoffrey Settle
Music is very important to me. For someone as old as me there is so much to draw from, it is so accessible nowadays through radio, online, cd, DVD, concerts. There is such a wide variety and mix from classical, through pop, the stuff my kids listen and rave about etc; there is something for everyone, invoking a wealth of feelings, moods, emotions and memories. Music will always be around and if you try and get rid of it, it will simply be created again using whatever exists, so don't worry music will never die unlike ourselves who will leave music behind even if it just singing in the shower. Geoffrey Settle
Geoff,Is that a yes or a no? Doh what part of very important don't you understand. I don't accept the premise that there will never be music, it will always exist and if there was a void then it would be created. But just for you Is music an essential part of life ? YES could you live without ever listening to some kind of music ?- Don't accept that this will be the case there will always be MUSIC
Peter T
The question was :::::: Could you live without music??? From your answer, I take it that the answer is NO!!!!. It wasn't a question of there never being music.
kateoflymm
a good cd big band of course, anice single malt a nice arm chair who could ask for anything more. I feel a song coming on. I visualise Dean Martin in that chair, hat over his eyes, whisky glass in one hand, cigarette in the other. So, Artie's written the lyric, anyone up for a good tune? kateoflymm
He was superb, Artie. It makes me laugh when I see old clips of his shows, showing him as constantly drinking and being tipsy. He had cold tea in that glass. It was part of his act to appear to be half-cut, though he was a heavy drinker, just not on stage or screen.

kateoflymm
Great stuff! Apparently he did consistently forget the words, even though he was sober, because he couldn't be bothered to rehearse. That's my kind of guy.
