asperity
For many years now the NHS has provided flu vaccinations every year for people seen to be vulnerable (old people, asthma sufferers etc). My point is that the government is sticking its nose where it's not needed, for the purpose of being "seen to be doing something". I would prefer the politicians to stop interfering in matters about which they know nothing. If they do this they will not be interfering in anything at all. If I feel the need to request a vaccination against the flu I know where my doctor's surgery is and I will phone up and ask for an appointment. observer
I just hope Al Quaeda and Co, are not noting the effects of this pandamic, and our reaction to it.
Adam
Asperity I think you are making the mistake of thinking that everyone is as bright as you are (which on the basis of some of your posts is not that bright ) But in fact the vast majority of the population is pretty stupid, even about things as rudimentary as washing their hands. That is why governments, councils, officialdom generally, have to "interfere"
Bazj
Got to agree with you Adam..... just think how many times you go to the loo and someone else comes in, has a wee and walks straight out again!

Tina1979
I got the " We have a few students - Possibly contaminated ( but wont confirm it )" letter from my sons school on Wednesday !! Â Now im beginning to think, that it would be better for them to have the virus before the proper "Flu" season kicks in, Whilst it's still mild and hasn't merged with any more flu variants doing the rounds ! Allow thier own immune systems to fight the mild version may help in defeating the predicted worse version in the winter months ? Â I still remember my own mum dragging me round to every house that had mumps / chicken pox etc... when i was younger, just so i could get it out the way and done with !! Could you treat flu the same ?

observer
Even a mild pandemic, can cause economic and social disruption, due to our modern dependency on job specialisation. Perhaps in the end, it's natures way of telling us, that we are overpopulating the planet - which is fine, as long as it isn't you that succumbs to it's effects! Sha
. If I feel the need to request a vaccination against the flu I know where my doctor's surgery is and I will phone up and ask for an appointment. Â Asperity, if politicians didn't 'interfere' there may not be any vaccine available at your doctors surgery for you to phone up for when you felt the need for it. Â I personally think the government should have acted more efficiently in containing the spread of this virus. I am also sceptical about the effectiveness of any vaccine. If and when, (and it is predicted it is more likely 'when') this virus mutates, a vaccine will have to be produced to combat the particular mutation. Whether Tamiflu will have any effect remains to be seen.
observer
Asp; some will call it God. I prefer the term nature. But Nature acts in mysterious ways, not always fair or just; life is a s***t sandwich and we've all got to take a bite!

busby
At what point does government lack of action become interference?
asperity
The NHS is big enough and old enough to deal with the flu without the government sticking its nose in and trying to micromanage everything.
Mary
My niece in Utah got it - works at a hospital - was deadly ill and finally after 10 days is sitting up and taking food. It's a nasty bug.
asperity
Sorry to hear about that Mary, but actually Swine flu in its present form is a mild form of the disease and has a lower mortality rate than the flu viruses that afflict us every year. Dizzy
Â Having been in Manchester airports terminal 2 arrivals a few weeks ago if they did have heat sensors in there they would have had to isolate everyone. It was so blummin hot in there it was unbearable ... a good breeding ground for germs if you ask me though

Dizzy
Maybe he has a point  I know quite a lot of people who have now had to pay for a Tamiflu prescription due to 'symptoms'... and all have been well again within a few days. Guess Tamiflu and/or nature definately work then
observer
Seems employers are now complaining that workers are using the "swine flu" as an excuse to scive off work, extending their hols etc - and it's causing disruption to their buisiness!
