The virus leads to your PC becoming a botnet to send SPAM and a vehicle for intruders to steal address books, credit card numbers, private information, and browsing histories. With regards to all these corporate/school/council networks being infected with it, obviously some IT departments aren't doing their job and keeping their systems patched and AV'd up.
