Peter T
I understand that Tescos use the ship canal to transport wine from Liverpool to Salford. Probably to stop it getting nicked coming through Warrington.
observer
I notice the term "uneconomical" is being used in the context of new ideas - however, as we are witnessing, economics change with the economic enviroment. We have major infrastructure problems: transport congestion, reliance on imported energy, threats of flooding and droughts, and rising unemployment. Now it doesn't take a genius to work out, that all these issues can be hit with a single shot, IE: a massive civil engineering programme to build hydro-electric dams and reservoirs in our mountain areas (highest point - thus giving gravity a chance) to deliver water through a canal network. Hydraulic pistons built into mountains can be used to store energy and deliver it at peak demand times. Estuary barriers can be built to mitigate flooding and capture tidal power, and also provide highway crossing points for traffic. The advantage of "civil engineering" projects, is that they are labour intensive (thus mitigating the unemployment problem) and around 70% of investment goes into wages (which allows folk to spend and pay taxes) - and it solves some of the major issues we are facing in the future in relation to the enviromental debate and the need for economic self sufficiency. Geoffrey Settle
Obs I have to agree with you and like the holistic approach but don't post your ideas on Paul transport web site the Conservatives may brand it as their idea. You are well under way to completing a PEST or PESTEL analysis having looked at the Political, Economic, Social and Technical factors plus Environmental & Legal. The following link highlights this approach when rapid change is occurring and new opportunities and threts exist as you point out. http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTMC_09.htm
observer
The Tories won't steal any idea that will cost them (and theirs) money! NuLab might use an idea, for a bit of political spin, which gets forgotten, when it leaves the front page of the newspapers, then they move onto the next "idea". It's all about votes folks!
