observer
At what age should we be legally considered Adult, and should it be a standard for all adult entitlements? Seems at 18 we're entitled to vote and die for our Country; drive at 17, consent to sex at 16 etc; but in Scotland (no doubt we will follow); they're going to increase the drinking age to 21! So, guys on leave from Afghanistan won't be able to buy a drink?!
asperity
Here we have another example of government failing to ensure that existing laws are adhered to and making up new legislation that will be ignored in much the same way.
tonymaillman
The actual period of childhood is getting shorter and shorter sadly, kids are 'thrust' into adulthood earlier and earlier, proving what an absolute gutter society this country has quickly become. 21 was always considered the 'coming of age' for centuries, it doesn't matter what laws are made because nobody will stick to them anyway
Mary
Ok adulthood should be 21 but people do not want the responsibility of a child over 18 so they made laws allowing children of 18 to work and drive. Interesting that they do not get all the benefits of being an adult until they are 21. Our laws changed long ago about drinking until the age of 21 - herded on by the car insurance people. We do not have a right of passage for kids - the time they are teens to real adults is very fuzzy and unclear. I think this has added to the confusion and problems that we face today in our society. Until we set stringent guidelines or come up with a better idea, chances are we will continue to slide down that slippery slope of uncertainty. observer
My point was, that whatever the agreed age, it should be a standard across the board for everything. As I said; how can you tell an 18 year old on leave from Afghanistan that he's under age (21)?
