observer
Well, after a long phoney war with Robert Mugabe; it seems the UK finally means buisiness, and is going to hit him just where it hurts - by taking away his honoury knighthood - wow! Paul Kennedy
Sad thing is that it seems to me that the general population were better off under Ian Smith's white minority rule. Even sadder thing is that the UK in effect put Mugabe in power.
asperity
Zimbabwe under Uncle Bob started out OK, it was only when his megalomania took hold that things started going downhill and the breadbasket of Africa became the basket case. Unfortunately, although African states demanded and got the right to oversee African matters, they seem to be unable or unwilling to curb the excesses of any of their members. Any interference by us or America is roundly condemned and we are left with only token sanctions like removing honarary knighthoods. Africa is going to have to sort out its own house Im afraid
observer
"The bread basket of Africa" indeed: was that when the farms were owned and worked by white farmers with the "protestant work ethic"? Then they were seized by Mugabe's mafia, and fell into disuse, tractors rusting in the fields etc. Is this why Africa is the sick continent of the globe? Bazj
so they all sit in a mire of thier own making (or at least their leaders making) but who do you think it will be that sorts it all out and pays for it after Mugabe has gone? Us of course!! Aid will be flying over there quicker than you can say "oh no not another one!"
Paul Kennedy
From the Times: Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe, today blamed the fact that millions of Zimbabweans are facing starvation on Britain and the West, as well as on climate change and soaring fuel prices. He said "our former colonial masters" had imposed "illegal sanctions" and tried to impose "regime change" by supporting the Zimbabwean Opposition. He did not mention that the Opposition claims to have won March's presidential election - a vote he had been accused of trying to rig. observer
Rumour has it, that New Labour sent a team over there to learn how he rigged the election, in preparation for OUR next General Election. Seems he refused to give them any tips, hence their attempt to take away his knighthood!
Bazj
So if they let Mugabe stand up and spout all that tosh, why didn't someone else stand up and make a speech which ripped the shiny headed bugger to bits? (have you ever noticed how shiny Mugabes head is??) They could have defended all what we and the rest of the world has done and explained a little more about what HE has done and maybe mentioned that election and its result. They were all obviously too politically correct to do it Baz
