observer
The current cult of instant success by a totally fickle fan base is pathetic. If you want to buy a team, you need money - if you wan't to build a team you need time and training.
safeway56
There's no need to remind you that the recently departed coach was in his sixth season as head coach, just how many more seasons would you have given him to achieve a reasonable level of success ? observer
How long does it take a school kid to mature into a fully grown man? Buying over ripe Ozzys at the tail end of their careers doesn't seem to be a winning formula!
safeway56
Again...who's responsible for recruitment of these players ? Mr Cullen can't be faulted over the last three imports though. Two of them, King and Monaghan came with glowing reputations but the only one of them who has been worth a carrot has been the least heralded, Chris Hicks. I wouldn't be at all sorry to see the other two at Manchester Airport this afternoon. They've both got big bucks contracts and will be extremely difficult to get shut of. There must be some very sharp agents in Oz to have wiped our eye so comprehensively. The next big Oz signings(if there are to be any) must be vetted in the flesh by someone at the club who knows what they are looking at, relying on Del Boy Oz agents isn't good enough. observer
As I say, you can't buy talent or commitment - and in any case the Wolves will never have enough cash to make a difference - unless Tescos bail them out - again!
safeway56
It's a common fallacy that Tesco bankrolled Warrington Wolves. If you take the trouble to consult the Warrington Borough planning records you'll find that the planning permission application was a joint venture between Tesco and Warrington RLFC. Tesco had no financial input to the club. The club belongs to whoever owns the shares and that isn't Tesco. The HJ stadium was partly financed by the sale of Wilderspool which was sold to the Borough at well below market price.
Gary
Not exactly correct Safeway - the stadium was mostly financed by Carlsberg Tetley as part of the sweetner to get Tesco developed. The council also "loaned" money to the rugby club when it was in danger of going out of business. The council also took Wilderspool as part of the deal as an investment opportunity, getting it a little on the cheap side. I am sure Observer knows the finer detail! observer
Think you may discover that the "new" stadium was mainly funded by "planning gain" (some might say "bung"), from the permission to grant a Tesco super-market on an "out of Town" site, contrary to National and Local Planning Policies. Still, we digress; having parted company with Paul Cullen, perhaps the fans (as experts in these matters); could explain how, with finite financial resources, WRLC can purchase`a winning team of mercenaries by next season, and who will be the new manager who will work this miracle?
