Representative Democracy ?

Observer II

Recommended Posts

If the idea is that we elect an MP to represent our local constituency, should it follow that that representative should be a local candidate, having resided in the constituency for at least 5 years ?   For decades we've had MPs parachuted into constituencies by all Parties,  having left University to become researchers in Westminster;   thus having no experience of life in that constituency or a proper job.    Perhaps such an ammendment to electoral law would help the Labour Party in particular, to re-connect with it's working class roots ?

I’d have thought it would be better to have someone that’s born and bread in the town stand for election and don’t see any benefit of bringing in an outsider. It could be there’s some thinking similar to how the police operate where local knowledge has to be weighed against the fact that someone could use their powers either for their own advantage or against local people they have issues with.

Bill 😊

Funny you should mention the Police in this context Bill;  I was passing two semis in Battersby Lane, and remembered they used to be Police Houses, in the days when all married coppers lived in local Police Houses.   Suppose you could call it real Community Policing, where the cops knew who was who and what they were up to; and often arbitrated on their door step on local disputes.

If they caught you up to no good;  you could expect instant justice - a clout round the back of the legs with their rain coat or clip round the ear. If you complained, they'd take you home and you'd get belted by your Dad.   Today's liberals would have a fit.    😉
