Protests ?

Getting dafter with each day -   Pimlico Academy School in London (where else);  has suffered a student protest over a new dress code and the flying of the Union flag over the building.   Time all public buildings in the UK were forced by law to fly the National Flag - time for a patriotic backlash against these spoilt brats.     😠

People are right to protest the stupidity regarding covid.   One simple example, from what is known now, we could have had 40,000 supporters in Old Trafford six months ago.  For the skeptics, wear a mask, take temperature at gate, have a 60 year old age limit and block off every other seat whatever, but don’t give up years of your life on another global warming, oh no, climate change, another ice age prediction. Instead we just ban everything because it’s easy and the result doesn’t come out of the politicians bank account.
This is only one example, there are many others, no one under 60 should have lost a day of work, no restaurant or bar should have been closed, people should be given the opportunity to exercise their right to freedom without government involvement, cos everyone knows, if you want something screwed up, involve the government.  Given a free choice, most everyone will choose not to die or cause death, they don’t need the government to threaten them.

That’s the point in Texas, it’s not a ban on wearing masks, it just says that it’s a personal choice, some stores still require masks, some don’t.  Texas is just the place where the government gets the hell out of the way and let’s the people decide.

once again I’ll finish with a nugget for the panic section.  Texas, Florida and several other red states that chose to open up, have experienced a decline in cases, since that decision, from between 10 and 20%.  All the Democratic run States, who misguidedly continue in lockdown have increases in cases have experienced increases from 50 to 150%, New York, in total lockdown, has increased by 125%.

The idiots can’t see the connection, if they insist on using their power, instead of a mandatory lockdown, they should make a mandatory order that everyone should go fishing or play golf!

Nice idea Bill, but our cities are just as compact as Europe, Beaumont has 200,000 people, Houston, Dallas, San Antone etc are in the millions.  The difference is, most of Texas is now vaccinated, but as I understand it, Europe is a cluster f#$&.

Bit of a long post there Stalard with a lot of debateable issues so I’m breaking it down so I don’t waste the good weather we’re having at the moment.

The protests we’re talking about here aren’t about the stupidity of covid as you put it but the rights in general to hold protests during a national lockdown. It started with the BLM where groups of mainly young people took to the streets breaking the rules regarding mass gatherings. With so many young people enduring months with little to do, this was a perfect opportunity for them to let off steam, so understandably protests grew. When the protests became riots, it forced the government to consider emergency measures which itself created even more violent protests and riots. Now the protests are mainly about the right to protest and police brutality rather than about covid itself.

During the summer months when the numbers were low, we did have a partial lifting of restrictions for football but prior to that, the government came in for a lot of criticism for allowing a Liverpool game to go ahead and for the Cheltenham horse race festival to take place. It was a widely held belief that these two events both contributed significantly to the overall infection rate so understandably, even though there was no proof that this was the case, most people understood why caution was advised where large crowds are involved. It all became a bit academic though as the numbers stated to rise again.

I know that there have been claims that the Cheltenham festival and the football game at Anfield as well as various marches/protests all led to increases in Covid infections, but has there been any serious study to show that this is true, or just people confusing correlation with causation?

As Bill says there is no proof at all as Bill said. Whitty explained to a Commons select committee that the banning of sporting events was not because of spread at the events themselves but by the groups of fans meeting together and the increased travel to and from the events. Transmission at the event which would be outside for such as Football was a small consideration.

Which other states do you refer to Stallard? Having low population density or warmer temperatures could be an alternative explanation and are scientifically more plausible than politics.

The scientist and medical experts whatever their political allegiances understand how these things pan out far better than the general public. They can interpret the statistics and predict quite accurately what’s likely to occur several weeks later and explains why the rates continue to rise for several weeks after lockdown. It can also lead those with a poor understanding into believing that a lockdown actually caused the event.

Just take a look at what’s happening in Brazil to see the effects of a country where the leader thinks it’s nothing to worry about.
