Observer II
The latest half baked idea from the Home Office, is to process asylum seekers at places external to the UK, like Gibraltar. If they enter the UK illegally, surely that's enough to refuse asylum, as they are thus proven criminals by the mere fact of such "illegal" entry. What's required is a fast track return to either the Country they last travelled from or their Country of origin; and legislation is required to formalise such an approach - it's not rocket science. 😠
Davy51
If these people are still sneaking in ,what happened to the robust prevention & deterrent policy post Brexit ? Isn't the idea though to remove asylum seekers from the UK while their application is processed ? Perhaps HMG is hoping the prospective intruders to our welfare system will prefer living somewhere warmer instead & abandon their applications. I'm sure they would love Paris in the springtime. Observer II
Problem is, even the Tories are to afraid to tackle Human Rights issues, whether in current legislation or Treaty. Before they are able to make progress and actually deport these people, they need new, supportive legislation, that will require application for asylum from Country of origin via a UK Embassy, in order to secure a visa. Anyone entering the UK without such permission should be immediately deported imo. 😠
Observer II
With yet more African migrants arriving in Italy, en route to Calais, with no hinderance by EU Countries; it's evident that the Tory Gov have lost control of the issue. Some major draconian changes are clearly required to physically prevent illegal entry into the UK, turning the boats back to France, and deporting those that are here. 😠
asperity
"with no hindrance by EU countries" Nail on head.
Observer II
Seems Barnier has had a Damacene conversion, as he's now calling for a lock out of immigrants from the EU. Perhaps he's sniffed the political wind as he prepares to enter the French Leadership race. 😉
Evil Sid
Probably another dig as the uk for brexit. as we are no longer in the EU they can now dump their excess on us and we can't return them. *not that we do that anyway*
Observer II
No doubt true Sid, but the real reason is that he's thrown his cap into the ring with Macron and LePenn, and French public opinion has moved right, towards LePenn. 😉
