Observer II
Why all the fuss over BoJo's alleged illegal move to ditch parts of the Brexit agreement with the EU ? When Governments change, so there aims and objectives will too; and they can't be hamstrung by previous decisions that now adversely affect us. History is littered with examples of Governments reneging on International agreements - Germany invaded Poland contrary to the Munich agreement; then invaded the USSR contrary to a non-aggression pact. The Russians invaded Japanese held Manchuria contrary to a non-aggression pact. We sank a neutral French fleet in Oran, then went on to invade neutral French territories in N/Africa. More recently, we invaded the sovereign State of Iraq, without a UN mandate, likewise Afghanistan. At the end of the day, expediency rules, and nothing is sacrosanct.
asperity
I agree with you Obs. The problem is that the remoaners and Brussles don't like being sidestepped and will whinge about this until the cows come home (over the hard NI border). Observer II
It was the Remainers under May, that got suckered into casting aside N/Ireland from the UK; a plot eagerly abetted by Dublin Gov, in pursuit of an Irish island of Ireland, with a border running down the Irish Sea. So to any self respecting Brit, this agreement can't be honoured, imo the Union is too important. Although I've been an advocate of devolution, it's clearly gone too far and been allowed to feed internal nationalism, when the idea should have been to create equity through Federal Regionalisation, which would have included England's Regions (the Red Wall). 😠
Confused52
I read it as telling Dublin they are in the last chance saloon and telling the to stick their fishing rights wishes in a place the sun don't shine. As for state aid rules we always had stronger rules that the others anyway so that is probably a fig leaf affair to be dealt with using weasel words or bad things will happen to your friends in Ireland.
Davy51
I'm sure any goods transiting the UK from Eire to Europe could easily revert to the old TIR system. That system may also cut out some vehicular journeys by illegal immigrants to the UK.
Observer II
Assuming we do finally exit with no deal; the next, more physical, issue to confront us, will be trespass into OUR fishing grounds by EU fishermen. We've been here before with the "Cod War" with Iceland, so the RN need to be geared up to protect our waters, and perhaps block the migrants at the same time. 😠
asperity
Perhaps we should contract with the Icelandic Navy to protect our fisheries, after all they were very successful in the Cod Wars 🦈.

Don't forget the Russians invaded Poland as well as Germany so we declare war on Germany and ship armaments via Our Russian convoys to Stalins USSR.My Father in Law was on them and said when they got to Murmansk they were not even allowed off the ships except whilst unloading and were treated like sh*te
Observer II
I didn't forget Latch; Russian aid wasn't so much an agreement, as an imperitive to keep the Soviets in the war soaking up 75% of the German Army. The Poles were between a rock and a hard place, but they said at the time, with the Germans we lose our freedom, but with the Russians we lose our soul. Ironically, Stalin had offered a pact to ally with the Poles, France and UK prior to their being invaded, but the Poles refused. How they thought that the Allies could come to their aid across Germany is a mystery. Then later Churchill met Stalin and sketched the "naughty document" which suggested spheres of influence after the war, not that Uncle Joe took any notice. Then after the war, the Poles became an embarrassment to the UK, and having fought with the Allies throughout, weren't even invited to the Victory parade in London. Then of course, there was the Katyin Wood execution site, were Polish Officers and Intellectuals were murdered by the KGB when they invaded eastern Poland, something the UK probably knew about, but was ignored for the greater good. Life and international politics is about expediency, not legal agreements.
asperity
Your last sentence nails it Obs. The outcry about Boris' actions from the usual suspects tells me he is doing the right thing.
Davy51
I didn't hear what the news article was about but i saw the arch remoaners, Major & Blair, swanning around together on the news.
Observer II
The woke left are up in arms over the self inflicted plight of migrants on Lesbos, who set fire to their camp. This tactic to get round the "Dublin Agreement"; which the EU has failed to uphold, and Merkel unilaterally sought to undermine; requires HMG to be even more steadfast in protecting UK interests. Boris is now looking at changes to the EU's HR Agreement to prevent abuse by the wets; but it seems the deadbeats in the Lords are preparing to block any common sense by the Government; which leaves the option of scrapping the House of Lords, the next item on the agenda. 😠

Observer II
Yes Latch; many went back to Poland, but were treated with suspicion by the KGB; many chose to stay in the UK with freedom and democracy. I believe there was a Polish Club in Blackpool, don't know if it's still going, but I guess most of the vets will be deceased by now.
