Observer II
A great deal of fuss is trying to be stirred up by Remoaners over the Russian spy scandal, even to the point of suggesting they compromised the 2016 EU referendum. Yet no direct evidence of such involvement is being produced, just a fog of allegation, I suggest more to invalidate the Brexit result than tackle any security weakness. I don't recall seeing any FSB agents at the polling stations or on the campaign trail.
asperity
The remoaners are still grasping at straws. They don't realise that the world has moved on and we have left an EU which is busy tearing itself to pieces.
Davy51
Well the voters were obviously happy enough to give Boris an 80 seat GE victory. Perhaps the Ruskies were hoping to give a boost to Red Jezza & his like minded chums.
Evil Sid
"no worries comrade, they do not suspect a thing"....🕵️♀️ It is getting worse than when the cold war was on. anything that is not what "we" want blame Russian interference.....🤭
Observer II
But the thing is, it's not as if we're not doing it to them; everyone's at it - be foolish not to.
asperity
We've been spying on Russia for at least 200 years, and them on us. "The Great Game".
Evil Sid
We have to spy on them so that we know if they know that we know what they know we know . everybody knows that...🤨

Latchford Locks
It's an accepted fact of life every country does it .. Ok fictional but James Bond 007 was a national hero in 1960's, Gary Powers USAF pilot was shot down and put on trial in USSR..(During a speech in March 1964, former CIA Director Allen Dulles said of Powers, "He performed his duty in a very dangerous mission and he performed it well, ) Even our friends across the chanel have had a go... James Bond and George Smiley can eat their hearts out. Who really won the Cold War for the democratic world? The French, naturellement. Although somewhat far-fetched, the boast that French intelligence "changed the world" does have some basis in fact. The story of L'Affaire Farewell, how a French mole in the KGB leaked information so devastating that it hastened the implosion of the Soviet Union, is comparatively little known in Britain or even in France. So maybe we should all stop this hand wringing and say ok it's all part of national security.
Evil Sid
James Bond The most well known "secret agent" in the whole world. Every villain and his henchman knew who and what he was. He may as well as worn a sandwich board with "not a secret agent really"written on it.

Davy51
Along with the mutually assured destruction of nuclear weapons , i would think that spying has helped to prevent world wars for the last 75 years.

Fair point. But a bit of a close run thing at times
Latchford Locks
I remember being terrified as a 10 year old watching the news in Oct 61. And made worse by the totally pointless duck and cover training we got. Been more sense if the three minute warning had sounded to just send us out for our last playtime on earth.
