Goonerman
Best time then! I also think it is time to honourably withdraw and get back to my studies. So bye for now! After all, I'm the gatecrasher, interloper and stowaway round here. [ 04.06.2007, 23:15: Message edited by: Goonerman ]
Mary
You are? Who said that then? Enjoy your studies and the DVD version is a fair rendition of fact - but remember TV is notorious when it comes to poetic license!

Peter T
Hey G'man, how's the flooding?
Goonerman
Well, our local police station had to be evacuated! We are OK. I took some of my books out from a cupboard in our out-house just in case. But in some places the rain was an inch high, some shops in the posh area of Cherryvalley were swimming, and some manholes popped out and the tarmac cracked. That was some rain I could hear outside. We couldn't see out properly in the workplace but the thunder and lightning display was apparently amazing to watch.
Goonerman
I'll tell you better than that, the roof of Tesco's in our local shopping centre caved in! )

observer
Noticed that according to the series (which presumably had historical advisors?); life (especially of slaves) was cheap and murder rife. I thought they had a Police Force in the form of the Pretorian Guard; or did that only begin with the first Emperor - Octavian (Augustus) Ceasare ?
Goonerman
Yip- Augustus founded the Praetorian Guard when he was Emperor.

observer
I've been searching my library for a reference to the first confrontation between Mark Anthony and Octavian and Pansa, which resulted in a battle in northern Italy; as shown in the series. observer
Found it: seems the series has gone in for some poetic license.
Goonerman
Or a drama with hundreds of episodes over 26 years! Don't forget the brutal proscriptions and the Republican suicides before we even get to the Battle of Philippi. First victim being Cicero. Whose head and hands ended up spiked on a gate in the Forum Romanum, the exact location eludes me for the moment. The Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus, perhaps. Must dig out my Suetonius. Amazing how we know this Obbs when I've not seen a full episode of Rome yet, just haven't got round to it. (The iPod generation would never believe me. I'd just teasingly tell them that the Romans recorded it on TV.) Read the books, don't wait for the movie.
Eagle
Someone should have introduced Roman men to women.
Peter T
How can you read them if they are buried? Better send for Indie, so he can find them for you.
