P J
Only if you read the Teegraph and Andrew Crichlows opinion ! There are many opinions about PJ, depending on what paper you read. I am yet to find one which claims the single and only reason Putin is in Syria is to keep access to his warm water port as I suppose very few people are so naive. Lt Kije
PJ Just take. Alook at how many warm water ports Russia has. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/10/navy-base-syria-crimea-putin/408694/

P J
Does Syria have any oil ? Yes although its strategic position and planned pipelines made it far more significant.
Coffee
The Swedish immigration minister has been on TV calling for the UK to open its boarders to immigrants saying his country is saturated and can no longer cope. He says the UK are partners in Europe and should help. Did the Swedish government ask their partners before they embarked on an open door policy to immigration and express and lenient process of applications?
Evil Sid
emailed vlad and he says what with the stakes through the heart and the whole blood sucking thing he does not have the time to sort out world affairs. somehow i don't think vlad dracula was the one you meant though. Did the Swedish government ask their partners before they embarked on an open door policy to immigration and express and lenient process of applications? Fuhrer Merkel did exactly the same... opened the doors, encouraged the immigrants to start the trip promising to take hundreds of thousands and then decided....ooops we shouldn't have said that", and then demanded that every other EU country should take the immigrants stackimng up on Germanys borders... and if they don't there will be consequences.... observer
Seems Frau Dumkopf is changing her tune in the light of reality. She's agreed with her Interior Minister to re-instate the Dublin Rules; but perhaps too late.
Bazj
Following the terrorist attacks tonight in Paris, France is closing its borders..... stable door - Horse - Bolted springs to mind
Sha
First thing that sprang to my mind also when I heard the news! Negligence and lack of foresight has led to these tragic deaths.
Lt Kije
Firstly I would like to pass on my condolences to the French people! And then add on, it's a bit rich of people to start to make political hay from an episode that has only just finished and there is do little information about. In fact I think it's s little sick!!! 1
asperity
If only it had just finished Lt Kije. I've a sad feeling that this is only the start!!
Lt Kije
When the IRA were fighting, they used to bring arms and explosives from the Republic, when you have a land border where people can dodge border patrols it is very difficult. The Irish bombed Manchester and London, the fact we are an island helps us, but we do not yet know if the attackers were French citizens, like the attacks in London on the tube.
observer
French citizens as you call them, are currently fighting for ISIL, along with British citizens and a host of other "European" Muslim fanatics. As Asp says, this is just the start, so we better get used to it, and it's coming closer to us all.
Lt Kije
So if it's just the start, we need to put boots on the ground and iradicaite ISIL, I would vote for that. And if we act quickly so will the French. But if we do, the U.K. Has to make a decision on Syria, do we go with the Russians and support Assad. Not s popular bloke for obvious reasons, but until we actually come out with a policy on Syria, ISIL will exploit the Wests difference in opinions and carry on planning and executing plans in the West. observer
I've been saying that all along Kije: ISIL has to be totally extinguished as an entity. The problem is, that significant gains are now starting to be made "on the ground" in Iraq principally by the Kurdish Pesh Merga (the ones the Turks were bombing!); which is probably what has stimulated the Paris attack. As ISIL begin to be defeated conventionally, they will switch to terrorist attacks on soft targets. They've seen on TV just how easy it is to enter Europe, just how weak and disorganised EU security is; so it's a no brainer for them to take the fight to their enemies homelands. But beyond that; we're involve in a war against an idea, albeit a perverted sectarian one, which won't be entirely extinguished by military action. Which means some upstream solutions will need to be found.
P J
They can get on a plane and fly in as we have no data base as to who is in IS. They can and do also use sympathisers who already live in target countries. Don't try to conflate refugee diaspora with terrorist murder. Bazj
Heard on Radio 4 earlier that the police found an Egyptian passport near one of the terrorists and another was supposedly identified as being part of the immigration stream from Syria..... P J
how wonderfully convenient, just like the Saudi passport at the twin towers that allegedly survived the inferno unscathed, why would you take a passport on a killing spree? Bazj
how wonderfully convenient, just like the Saudi passport at the twin towers that allegedly survived the inferno unscathed, why would you take a passport on a killing spree? Wonderfully convenient it may well be, it may not be true or it may be true, but the reporter said that a Syrian who was known to have been part of the migrant exodus to Europe was one of the terrorists who were killed and identified as well as a white blond haired guy who was apparently seen by one of the people who escaped from the night club........ Just saying what was broadcast on Radio 4.... didn't read it in the sun or the daily mail or watch it on sky news.... just thought I'd point that out
