observer
Think the quotes refer to actual wins in the European election, which in themselves caused tremors within the political establishment, not a prediction of May's election; where the reality of the first past the post system, limits the extent of seismic activity. P J
Ah it's the system that's at fault not the message lol. Refresh my memory please, which side of the argument did you come down on when you had the chance to change the voting system when we had the AV referendum? If you were against change then no use skriking now really.
observer
Who said the FPTP "the system that's at fault"? It's just a fact, that vote share is irrelevant to first past the post. Does that mean we should embrace AV - no. FPTP has, until recently, generally produced decisive Government with parliamentary majorities. However, with the three main parties trying to secure the centre ground to the point of being indistinguishable; coupled with an economic crisis and issues that fail to be addressed; the Westminster bubble is disconnected from the lives of the majority, hence the current disaffection with politics, resulting in a mood move to alternatives or simply folk just not voting at all. I believe this will be exacerbated by a hung parliament, so AV wouldn't help. Unless of course, the politicians start to think outside the box, and consider devolution in a meaningfull sense; EG: Powers down from Brussels, down from Westminster to the Regions; down to local councils. Thus making local governance relevant. We have an archaic system with more politicians per capita than most, which isn't fit for purpose; unfortunately it's unlikely to change as our current political elite won't, like turkeys, be voting for Christmas. There could be a place for AV, with a reformed House of Lords, where 700plus grumpies, picking up £300 per day, could be replaced by a 100 seat Senate, directly proportional to the share of the national vote; but don't hold your breath.
