Davy51
So WBC have agreed to lend £90 million to Helena Housing to help with financing affordable rented homes across the north west . I am sure the rewards for this will come back in time in terms of repayments, but would the money have been better spent within the borough ? May be a more comprehensive public transport network to ease the gridlock that can strangle Warrington.
Dizzy
It was on the news today but I only caught a tiny bit of it. Is it 2/3rds of the new houses being built will be in St Helens and 1/3 in Warrington ? Something to do with the Plus Dane Group too....... http://www.plusgroupltd.org.uk/article.asp?id=403 I didn't know Plus Dane had anything to do with the so called affordable houmes at the Walton Locks development though. Guess they must have bought in or something.
Davy51
I didn't see any of the tv news reports Dizzy, just the Guardian web page report. I would think if Helena are involved the rents will be closer to council house rents though.
observer
Problem is, unless housing is subsidised, it remains unaffordable to many, either to buy or rent; hence housing benefit. Now with HB being paid to the renter, rather than the landlord direct, many private landlords are withdrawing from an insecure situation. Perhaps if LA's were funded to increase housing supply, to provide "cheap" rented housing directly, folk would be housed and demand reduced, thus reducing price inflation throughout the housing market and the wheel will have turned full circle. Davy51
I was think may be having lent this money that WBC would be quids in in the future when it is paid back with interest Obs. A long term benefit for Warrington.
Dizzy
What would happen if Helena Housing or Plus Dane Group went bust or can't that happen ?
observer
Dave, they were "quids in" in terms of assets, when they owned all the housing stock and the land it was built on. However, the immediate problem is to get young folk into housing, which imo requires local political control of lower end housing supply - again. Davy51
Yes ,we need affordable social housing instead of having private landlords charging extortionate rents.
Sha
The Plus Dane Group and Helena Housing both have excellent reputations, pity that Warrington's housing stock wasn't passed over to them - together with the govt money for investment. If Golden Gates hadn't decided to build 'flagship' offices for the staff they may have been able to afford to build some new houses and WBC wouldn't have had to invest any public money at all - and we would have been spared that tin-pot blight on the historic setting of our town hall.
