Bazj
Kije.... if the nuclear industry is going Chinese.... will you have to learn the lingo?? A German friend of mine who we met on honeymoon over 20 years ago now is learning to speak some Chinese dialect because the company he works for sees China as the place to be for work in the future... he does already speak about 6 languages (including two Indian dialects) and spends a lot of time working in Mumbai... Maybe you could corner the market and export yourself to China!!
Davy51
Aren't the Chinese getting heavily involved with Manchester airport & its surrounding area in some commercial way or other Baz ?

boris1066
Aren't the Chinese getting heavily involved with Manchester airport & its surrounding area in some commercial way or other Baz ? On the 9 Oclock news tonight. Deal is worth £85 million for development of shops and business around the\airport
boris1066
Noticed that one Asp; but they did say that they would have the Minister on later in the series. Bit dubious about this "price freeze", the energy companies now have 20months to artificially up their prices before an election, in order to get them over Milliband's two year price freeze. He's also going to separate delivery and supply within the industry; but that just adds to the current smoke and mirrors cartel. Much better, and more honest, to re-nationalise the lot imo. It's then a question of who pays the taxes. btw agree with you about Milliband's "green energy tax"; yet another Labour initiative, without thinking through to the consequences. Spot on observation. Looks like three of the big six expect a change of Government and have started the ramp already !!
Robbo
btw agree with you about Milliband's "green energy tax"; yet another Labour initiative, without thinking through to the consequences. According to Nick Clegg and Vince Cable any decision to axe environmental levies on people’s household bills would end up increasing bills. Bazj
well with maths like that; it's no wonder we ended up in such a mess.... and who cares what a couple of lib-dums say now? they will be a party of ex-MP's after the next general election with a following on a par with the average Warrington Town home game
Davy51
At least any profits generated by a re nationalised energy programme would boost the economy rather than line pockets of shareholders & fat cat bosses.
observer
Well, we've had a smoke and mirrors deal with the privatisation of the energy companies; and now we seem to have another with the French and Chinese with the new nuclear station. A guaranteed return on their investment apparently, regardless of market rates; with any loss in profit below £92 per megawatt being made good by Joe Public (either as customers or taxpayers). Clever folk these Chinese !
asperity
However the difference is that nuclear power is dependable 24 hours a day 7 days a week unlike wind (£100/MW onshore and £150/MW) when the wind is blowing at the right speed. The fault lies with our governments listening to the green lies for the last 20 years and not upgrading our power generation when it would have been cheaper.
observer
Asp: I'm alluding to the financial deal with the Chinese, not the energy source. Whilst I remain a critic of the Nuclear option; I would have been prepared to tolerate a British owned and controlled station, despite the ultimate commissioning/de-commissioning costs and the question of disposing of the waste. This particular deal, doesn't even get us over the hump, as it's going to take 10 years to build (assuming Brussels gives the OK!), so there still remains the question of "blackouts" in the near future. Lt Kije
Has Brussels got anything to do with it Obs? Wind and solar power are getting cheaper and better, but they are not perfect and are years off being cheap, but they are heading in the right direction. observer
According to the news report; the EU has to vet the deal due to the Gov involvement in it. There will be an energy deficit in the near future, unless we stop closing (coal fired) stations until their replacements are on line. Lt Kije
Which government the French or UK?
observer
The UK Gov by providing a guarantee to the Chinese, could be in violation of EU rules on State aid.
Evil Sid
So it is the lowest bidder who gets the job provided they are an EU member then even though the Chinese can do it cheaper, quicker and give you a choice of boiled or fried rice with the order
Bazj
Having seen the quality of Chinese engineering projects in the past.... I would be very very worried about allowing them to build over here; especially building something as risky as a nuclear power station! asperity
I've sailed on Chinese built ships and the quality is good in the main. Some minor faults only.
