observer
Seems some "prison expert" is saying, crimes such as theft, fraud & burglary (non-violent); shouldn't be punished with prison, but fines or community service orders. Just asking - but how do they pay fines and will they comply with community service orders; and does it prevent them thieving?
Evil Sid
They will still do the thieving to pay the fines they get for thieving in the first place. With all the problems we have had with tagging maybe the old ball and chain approach may make a comeback. Mind you probably not as they would weigh them in for srap
Davy51
By all accounts the powers that be have trouble implementing community service anyway. It makes you wonder why we even bother prosecuting some of these people when the punishment is insufficient .

Bazj
I regularly watch those fly on the wall TV cop shows and the ones that get me are the ones where the driver of a stolen car takes the cops on a 30 mile chase....they follow him with half a dozen cop cars and throw the helicopter in for good measure.... at the end of the chase the thief does a runner only to be stopped by yet another cop car with a few Alsatians in it.... then right at the end; Jamie Theakston says...." and the man who took the cops on a 30 mile chase before wrecking a stolen car and biting the ear off a police dog was sentenced to 40 hours community service and fined £200.00)".... It just cost about £10,000 in Police time and resources to catch him, plus the costs of prosecuting him......... but I guess some would see that as a punishment!
observer
Seems through improper checks, many "lifers" have been "let out" early in any case?!
Bazj
Seems through improper checks, many "lifers" have been "let out" early in any case?! Obs.... from first hand experience; "Letting lifers" out early has been going on for over 15 years that I know of
observer
This isn't through soft sentencing, it's through admin inefficiency by Prison and Probation Services, apparently.
Bazj
yes.... and it has been going on for over 15 years that I know of..... particularly the failures of the probation service
Davy51
Apparently it may be necessary to let some more lifers out early if anything comes from the government suggestion of giving benefit cheats anything up to 10 years sewing mailbags ! I think we may need to see a prison building programme if that comes off.
Lt Kije
We have needed new prisons for years, bi put nobody wants them near where they live.

Evil Sid
Could send all the cut-throats on a nice cruise around the Somalian coast might solve two problems there.
Bazj
The problem is that because of all the human rights nonsense, prisoners are usually placed in a prison which is close to their home town as possible. This allows the murderer to still have family visits and all that....Nice innit!! Why we cannot build a big prison somewhere on an inhabited island (possibly the one with anthrax on it would be a good start) and just chuck all the lifers and violent idiots on there is beyond me. It is another example of how bloody soft this country has become over the last 50 years and why just about everyone in the know takes the p%%s out of the system
Lt Kije
We could send them to Australia, where they would also get a pay rise
Bazj
We could send them to Australia, where they would also get a pay rise isn't it ironic; that is why the eastern Europeans flock here to get just the same thing. Minimum wage here is like a lottery win in Bulgaria

observer
Talking of "letting them out"; a young girl travelling to school on a bus, is knifed to death by a person with a history of mental illness; which none of the agencies appear to have noticed. Eagle
The usual statement from Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust said it was clear there were lessons to be learned. If they are it will make a bloody change.
harry hayes
No-one has mentioned the ship Clio. Seems something similar is an eminently sensible way out of the problem. Happy days

harry hayes
T'was a ship anchored in Liverpool bay for bad young people. Used to frighten us to death. Either before or after it was a training ship for aspiring mariners. Happy days
asperity
Actually she was anchored off Anglesey: http://maritimematters.com/2011/03/naughty-boys-ship-exhibition-opens/ HMS Conway was a training ship that used to be anchored in the Mersey off Rock Ferry until she was moved to the Menai Strait during WW2 for safety.
