Tracey Bennett
You've compiled this yourself Algy? From Directories? That's a huge amount of work, well done! Any idea what the British Workman Public House Co is? I'd guess Working Mens clubs as there are a few of them. Thanks for doing this, I'm about to hit c&p! I have compiled them over a long period of time Tracey I just wish I could fill some of the gaps. Regarding c&p them, thats why I placed them there. Not heard of the British Workman, there was the British Tar on Winwick Road opposite the Coop Hall.

Hi Tracey, Yes there were a few of them in Warrington. Bridge St, Horsemarket St, Liverpool Rd and Market St. There may have been others but these are the only ones I've seen. They were set up as an alternative to public houses and didn't sell alcoholic drinks. I think they were similar to the temperance movement. Trying to keep the working classes away from the evil drink. Never worked for me.

WF, I never knew that about British Workman Public House Co's being temperance pubs, so to speak. 73 and still learning - love it!. A good article on the temperance subject including the BWPH Co. appears here:- http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=5XsNgLkXHcMC&pg=PA10&lpg=PA10&dq=British+Workman+Public+Houses&source=bl&ots=ZECIDuFra8&sig=VzpMCgkGoVPEC9eIOjWnhZLggrE&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zDADUvGTN6Sn0QWk_4D4Ag&ved=0CDIQ6AEwATgK#v=onepage&q=British%20Workman%20Public%20Houses&f=false Also never realised Lyon's Coffee Houses were the same, only for white collar workers, (also mentioned in the article).
