observer
Poverty and riches are a relative concept; it would be strange to hear that every generation in history hasn't progressed in material terms, relative to their forbears; the question is, the relative distribution of wealth amongst their contempories. During the zenith of the British Empire, a period of absolute wealth for this country; we had poverty on a huge scale, alongside riches. Although that wealth gap has been tempered by the actions of individual reformists and collective political action, the divide still exists, and is now getting wider again. If we look for a point in our history when the gap was almost closed; we need to look at the '45 Atlee Government (a Socialist Gov); that gave birth to the NHS and the Welfare State; a legacy that has unfortunately been undermined by successive Govs since. At the end of the day, it's a question of what you consider civilization to be.
asperity
As I said Obs, blinkered. I am talking about the whole world with billions of people while you are obsessing about the history of these small islands with a few million population very few of whom are destitute. As for the gap being closed by the Atlee government (another of your obsessions) I would say that the perception is solely in the imagination of you and your socialist comrades. Spokoynoy nochy tovarisch ;-)
Lt Kije
The German Nazi party was a National Socialist party This might help http://www.diffen.com/difference/Communism_vs_Fascism Asp your Concise Encyclopaedia of Economics is written by Conservative Libertarian and should be treated as propaganda, you could say one right wing organisation trying to paper over the political right's wrongs
asperity
As usualLt Kije you dismiss something on the grounds that you don't agree with the messenger, nothing more. Socialism and fascism are both based on the subjugation of the individual to the state and anyone who disagree with the state is eliminated. This is not the way capitalism works, it's up to the individual to make their own way in life. Anyone who is truly unable to do this should be helped by their fellow men, but not supported the way we do today. As we have found by the welfare state, people start taking the piss. observer
So, when the ship's going down, it's every man for himself?! Perhaps a job on an Italian cruise liner then Asp?!
asperity
A ship is a very poor metaphor for life Obs. And your attempt at humour is rather pathetic to be honest.
Evil Sid
Good grief folks it's a picture on a five pound note that will probably be changed again in about five years time. get a grip.
Lt Kije
No Asp I dismiss it because it is crap, Why not use the oxford dictionary to get your definition, or any respected reference book, and not a politically motivated one.I suspect because it did not say what you wanted it to. asperity
There's that whining noise back again. Lt Kije, what you are doing is called argumentum ad hominem. You disagree with the politics of someone and try to discredit whatever they say by calling them "right wing" as if that is a sure sign they are bad and should never be believed. However you don't offer any cogent argument yourself to support your own position, just sling the manure and hope it sticks.

Evil Sid
Ok then as we cannot agree to what political side of the field, regardless of sex, should be represented on the five pound note who would be an ideal candidate. Ideally they should have no political affiliations whatsoever, have achieved some act that has made them a household name either in the past or the present preferably for something positive and lastly should have been born within the British isles. and the candidates are? (please give a reason for your answer)
asperity
Morecambe and/or Wise. Definitely household names but politically neutral (as far as I know).
Bazj
Eric Morecambe would be perfect.... as he once said about money.... 'I believe in honesty. I once found a wallet with three hundred pounds in it. Did I keep it? I did not. I went out and put an ad in the lost and found column of the Budapest Daily News.' Davy51
To stop the arguing why not someone who has had a sex change like that sailor in the 70's (?) who turned into that woman who had the shops in Manchester. That might also provide for the political aspect as well ...card carrying seaman becomes business woman...Socialist & Tory happy.
