observer
Am I right in thinking that the last Labour Gov , negotiated a deal with GPs, which increased their salaries to around £100K pa, whilst at the same time releasing them from any commitment to out of hours services; which were then reliant on locum services? Presumably, the locum services didn't work (and are still not working satisfactory), as demand shifted to 999 and A&E services. To compensate, Labour set up NHS Direct, to provide diagnosis over the phone and possibly reduce demands on Emergency provision. This service morphed into NHS 111 under the present Gov, and doesn't appear (according to news reports) to be working properly either. So, would it be reasonable to say, that from the original bungled pay deal with GPs, the politicians have continued to dig the hole ever deeper by their meddling ? asperity
No surprises there. Nothing is ever so bad that a politician can't make it worse.

Davy51
It is amazing how the powers that be seem to have created another black hole to pour money into, to try & free up A&E space ,which at the minute seems more dangerous than just staying at home & taking a couple of aspirin. observer
Think we need to go back to the idiot, who agreed to write off the GPs 24/7 commitment on top a pay rise. The idea that you can no longer call your own GP at night or weekends, the GP that knows your medical history and knows you, is frankly insane. It's already had tragic consequences, where imported locums from overseas, have caused overdoses, and that's when they do turn up in time. So folk are naturally turning to A&E as an alternative, which again (aside from swamping the service) poses questions about just how the Gov intend to deal with future contagious pandemics, where isolation (at home) is essential to reduce spread. Yet another example of the inability of politicians to think anything through.
observer
So it's looking like the Health Minister may go back to the GPs to rectify the situation, but I presume the GPs will want even more money for returning to 24/7 cover?
