One dark and misty cold winters evening Lord Arley was out walking in his woods on Arley estate with his trusty hound whom he called ‘Dog,’ padding along at his side, when he heard voices in the wood, sensing there were poachers after his deer Lord Arley let ’Dog’off his chain and whispered the command ‘kill’ ‘Dog’ tore off into the wood eventually coming up behind a tall dark shape moving slowly and quietly through the trees ‘Dog’ stalked the shape until it stopped, this was the time for ‘Dog’ to go for the kill and kill he did, he tore into the man’s throat and with the clamping of his jaws severed the jugular vein, quenching his thirst on the warm spurting blood from the lifeless corps, unable to find his master, ‘dog’ made his way back to Arley Hall. The next morning the gamekeeper went searching for Lord Arley and eventually located him lying lifeless on the ground with his throat torn open, ‘Dog had run around in a circle and by mistake had attacked and killed his own master. The gamekeeper had no option other than to shoot ‘Dog’ and bury him along side Lord Arley’s tomb on the estate. Lord Arleys eight year old son young Julian pined for both his father and ‘Dog’ who had been his constant companion for so long, the young lad fell ill and never recovered and to this day the ghosts of Julian and ‘Dog’can be seen playing on the estate paths. Cleopatra Posted April 3, 2013 Report Share Posted April 3, 2013 I've seen the dog, maybe 15 years ago, and questioned why a dog was allowed to run and wander by itself off lead. Hassan called to it and tried to get it to come to us. Then it disappeared before our eyes, Pardon the expression but Hassan went as white as a ghost. Dizzy Posted April 3, 2013 Report Share Posted April 3, 2013 Rumour has it that the ghost dog will try to attack any male with a beard or those wearing any sort of clothing that resembles what the gamekeeper who shot it was wearing at the time. Some think that ghost 'Dog' is now just protecting the little boy but many think it's because 'Dog' is still pretty p'd off that he got shot for being a loyal servant to his master and just doing what he was told and still want's revenge. Never go to Arley wearing earthy colours such as greens/browns or even a combination in checks just incase. She's definately a real person and just the way old photo's came out if there was slight movement. Can anyone see the figure near the trees of a large well built ?man? but who only who looks to only have half a head (or maybe an off cenre head) and who also appears to be holding some sort of an object in a cloth at a level with his shoulder? demelzadoe Posted April 4, 2013 Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 Been called cynical many times, BUT, having veterinary training I have to wonder why Dog didn't pick up on the scent of his/her own master. Why he/she wandered around in a circle on a property which was so familiar to him/her. No eye witness to this account. Could it be that Dog just got fed up and turned on his/her own master. Ann Bennett, Kitty Bennett's sister married Thomas Swinton whose father, Peter, was Farm manager at Arley Hall. As a single man Peter lived in the servant's quarters at Arley then he married a house maid and moved to Dingle Farm at Appleton (one of the Warburton's tenanted farms) where they had 10 children, one of which was Thomas. algy Posted April 4, 2013 Author Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 We haven't been in yet Trace, we pass there each time we go to visit our daughter at Appleton, coming from Appleton Thorn direction it is just as you drop down into the Dingle and there always seems to be plenty of cars in the farmyard, we shall probably go when the weather becomes warmer.
