asperity
Asp - and I said: there'd been a baby boom this year (indigenous & no doubt immigrant too). Baby boom or not, there is no country in Western Europe where the birth rate is even at, never mind above, the replacement level: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2127rank.html
observer
.... but we're talking about the whole planet Asp - population levels are still rising, around 50% of folk are now living in congested cities and more economic refugees are heading our way. asperity
But population levels are rising at an ever slower rate thanks to the spread of technology and vastly improved agriculture meaning that people no longer need to reproduce at such a high level to ensure that some off their offspring survive. It is thought by many that the world's population will peak and then start to decline sometime in the next 150 to 200 years. And if we hadn't wasted £Billions/$Billions/€Billions trying to stop the climate from doing what comes naturally we could have ensured that, for example, everyone in the world had access to clean drinking water and a reliable electricity supply. This would slow the rate even more. Politicians eh, don't you just hate them?
observer
I'd like to think your right Asp; BUT we have the problem of "religion" (RCs to be precise), "ignorance", the knowledge and means of birth control in many places due to a lack of female education and rights, which in Africa is contributing to the aids epidemic. "poverty", many third world countries have no organised State support for the elderly, thus kids are their carers in old age. Thus more mouths to feed in areas that can't sustain them, thus the regular cases of famine.
asperity
The regular famines are most often caused by civil and/or intertribal wars causing displacement of peoples from their homes and crops/livestock. As for blaming religion - well thats just another of your favourite hobby-horses isn't it Obs.
Bazj
Listening to David Attenborough on five live this afternoon and he gave some creedence to the fact that where a country has a good healthcare system, educated and equal women, the birth rates drop and harmony regins.... He cited Africa as a place where when a woman has no rights and no vote and is only seen as a means to beed and feed, they tend to have many more kids in case some die and to give them means to feed themselves when they get older....
