Bazj
who says the power stations are too old? The EU does..... if they can last another 5 years then they should... not shut down on a whim from Brussels.... we should not leave ourselves reliant on foreigners for electricity.....
Lt Kije
No the UK does Baz, As they signed the EU protocol, they have had plenty of time to build newer power stations but have not, The right question to ask, Would be, Why have successive UK governments failed to build power stations? Other EU Countries managed to do it, All were given time to do it.
observer
Perhaps the politicians were arguing as to "how far" electricity could travel?!
Lt Kije
that would be how far does hot air travel Obs
Bazj
well seeing as we haven't managed to build new power stations in time we should keep our old ones open until we do build some..... not be reliant on foreigners for electricity as I said before.....regardless of what Brussels says and what we signed up to.... unforeseen circumstances have changed the game. those circumstances being lack of government building. Tough, but we should not leave ourselves open to blackmail over electricity because it will happen
Lt Kije
Why have we not built them, and why are you blaming the EU for the UK government incompetence. Why are you reluctant to blame the people who are actually responsible.
Bazj
The EU has set the stage that requires these power stations to be closed down..... they are to blame..... The government hasn't built new ones for whatever reason.... they are partly to blame too.... we should keep our old stations until the new ones are built to prevent us being blackmailed into paying high electricity prices..... wolfie
So when is Fiddlers closing down ? And if it isn't because they have invested in new technology to reduce emissions then why don't the other coal stations invest in it.
Lt Kije
Not up to date with Fiddlers Wolfie, All that money they spent was due to the EU ruling on emissions, Might be that Scotish & Southern invested wisely, While the other producers choose just to run into the ground. Drax which is are biggest power station has done the same, but interestingly on that, the power company have sold Drax to a management buyout, Suggests to me they were off loading what they consider to be a liability in the long run. observer
So there was an "EU ruling on emmissions"?!
boris1066
But that isn't the point - "who builds them" - the point is: "how much will they cost"? We now know how much it takes to decommission these things (£67billion and rising) a problem being swept under the carpet by successive Governments. Now Cetrica have given us a clue as to the levels of expense required to commission the new ones. Rolls Royce have been building PWR nucleur propulsion units for submarines for decades and I think are talking to EDFon being involved in the next generation of power stations. As far as the cost is concerned, there doesn't seem to be an option.
asperity
How much do you think it will cost to decomission these windmills given that the millionaires increasing their fortunes from them won't be paying?
observer
Thought "options" was what we're debating on this topic Boris?!
Bazj
British Gas profits up 11% to £606m..... now there is part of the reason your fuel bills are so high!!
observer
You mean, the so-called (smoke and mirror) privatisations, havn't kept prices down through competition?!
safeway60
Energy companies....oil companies...all cartels...If they aren't how come they all increase their prices within a couple of days of each other ?..British Gas today announced a whopping profit but they employ an army of accountants to hide profits and declare only what they feel they can get away with....They're a bunch of well educated well dressed upper class thieves. Posh criminals but criminals nonetheless.
