Banner Adverts

I still can't see them either.

Bill, I just opened the news story and saw nothing like you mention and I'm NOT using any special pop up blockers at all as I rather like to see all the genuine local adverts on Warr WW as after all these local advertisers are just trying to earn a living and who paying for their ads.

For all of you who are blocking them all, well shame on you :wink::P

The other google type banners don't bother me as they are just there at the top and are easily ignored (until someone mentions them changing according to topic ha ha )

I only run Virgin Media's security now (which I've just checked) and it has standard 'anti malware', 'firewall booster' and 'website checker' turned on I even turned all those off for a few minutes and still couldn’t see what you mention.

Eeek I’ll probably get hacked now

I don't run any other checkers/blockers/spyware/malware stuff like I say as they started to mess up my pc as they conflicted with each other at times so all I use on top of my standard stuff are 'tracks eraser pro' every week and also 'reg clean expert' whenever I remember.

What did you drink at the beer festival last night Bill and did you keep a sample

Only kidding of course so please don’t take offense

I know what you mean Bill because I started getting them too but it sort of only lasted a few days then stopped. They are link words and when your mouse curser passed over one a picture which related in some way to that word would pop out, maybe a link to a site on that subject word or an advert.

Thank goodness for that, I thought I was cracking up. Incidentally I’ve just checked a couple of PCs here at work and they don’t show the same issue so it probably is some kind of virussy thing that’s snooked in. It wouldn’t surprise me because the grandkids download all sorts of junk on that one!

Bill :)

not come across that on here but have on some other sites, usually ones that I have gone to to look up a specific problem. as you say certain words in the text are highlighted blue and will usually take you to a page that has a tenuous link to the subject or the word or words highlighted.

it is a way for some website to earn money as they get paid for every link that is clicked on and there are companies specialising in this sort of thing.

This is getting weird. Not only does the banner reflect the topic or your browsing. Here I am with a glass of fanta green apple (if you haven't tasted it you really should, very nice it is), I glance at the top of the page and hell's bells...! The banner is advertising fanta green apple. Now how did they do that!

Thank goodness it happens to you too Cleo.

On Sunday I'd taken my other half's mobile phone completely apart and had the bits on a tea towel on the radiator after he dropped it down a toilet  He said when I'd finished on the pc he'd look for a new one. We had not looked at that stage and had only 'spoken'.

The banners then started showing 'mobile phone' ads. Just coincidence obviously and I was laughing.

Later that day we'd been chatting about car insurance and how out lad needs transport of his own and the next time I looked the banners were showing 'insurance'.

This morning I phoned to book my other halfs car in for an MOT and one of the topics I've just this minute been on had a 'Halfords 50% off your MOT'

These coincidences are a bit spooky but mine aren't as weird as your fanta

Maybe it's just because we are actually taking more notice of what the ads say and they seem to 'fit' from time to time OR maybe Gary/Google has tapped into our brains somehow.

I preferred the ads I was getting the other day.

I'm already in a foul mood tonight and having searched 'something' earlier google and whoever elses ads are clearly attempting to push me right over the edge now :evil:

GO AWAY AND LEAVE ME ALONE BEFORE I REALLY SNAP AND LOOSE MY RAG COMPLETELY !!!!

I don't mean you Cleo by the way

Yep you did Algy ... but that doesn't put me in a better mood but nice try

Just out of interest.... re this 'Adblock' software you run... does that also block all the adverts from businesses on the right hand side of the front page news pages of War WW ?

I have frequently had the blue words, but somehow manage to lose them.

What I do have now and it is really getting on my nerves, is something called Wizebar that pops up from the bottom.

It started when I downloaded what I thought was the Adware that Algy recommended, and now no matter what I run, I can't get rid of it.

I have tried Malware, Spyboy and AVG. Nothing shifts it.

So you are blocking all the genuine local business adverts from people/businesses who pay to advertise on the front news page.

Their payments presumably pays towards the running of Warrington WW and things like everyone getting free online news every day, free monthly magazines and having access to a free forum to chat on etc .

Shame on you Algy and Gary will be very cross and might poke sticks in your eyes.

You recommended something called 'Adblock 2.1.2' Algy... gosh is your memory that bad

Peter.. where are you :unsure::shock:

All I can say is that I had/have no problems with it, A lot depends where you download the software from!.

Sorry you became infected, or rather your computer Peter.

I think I would be better not making any software recommendations in future.

If you are using firefox then all you need to do to get adblock plus 2.1.2 is go to the tools menu select get add ons and then search the mozzilla website for adblock and down load. It is the one I use (but disabled on this site so as not to upset GARY) :|

What I like is the ability to enable or disable either on the whole website or just the page you are viewing.

Not sure if there is a similar thing for google chrome and as for IE(Whatever version is out now) I have no idea as I have only ever used it to download firefox.

Juat what I have been telling them Sid!.

If you do download it make sure it's from either their own site or through Firefox (if that's your browser) or Google Chrome, stay clear of the 'third party' sites as that's usually where the malware originates from.
