Bazj
Wasn't he the Tory candidate ? what difference does that make? Was that Maggies fault too or something? All of these Police Commissioners are surrounded by hangers on and matey matey people
observer
The stated idea was to "democratise" the running of the Police. The motive was to place a firewall against blame, between the Government and the people; even though the Home Office really control them. Lt Kije
Your probably right Baz, they would have all appointed friends, but if it had been a Labour commissioner you would have pointed out the political connection.
Davy51
And now this subject gets even better....there is a article on today's Guardian web page where Cheshire police are wanting applications to fill 5 posts on an audit committee to scrutinise the department of the Cheshire Police Commissioner. It's great ,i love it ,an even bigger waste of ratepayer's money !

observer
An interesting google for the googlers; would be : How many folk were on the old Police Cttes and how much did it cost V How many are now employed by the new PPC and how much does it cost? Teessidewire
Policing is supposed to be non-political, the election of Police Commissioners have instantly changed this. Many have been elected on a political ticket. Some people are also right in stating that a number of them have employed friends/cronies as their assistants/lackies etc. What really worries me is that they have the power to hire and fire Chief Constables. What qualifies them to do this?
wolfie
This is a quote from the Conservatives home page regarding Police Commissioners. "We are working with police forces to drive out wasteful spending, and increase efficiency in backroom roles. We will work with Police and Crime Commissioners across England and Wales to find new ways to cut red-tape and waste,"
Nick Tessla
Do those jobs come with super Ann? Widdecombe?
Lt Kije
Not sure she qualifies as super, in fact I am sure she does not, But if it did, they could not pay me enough
Davy51
Article in the Guardian about another new post that our Police Commissioner is creating.... a Youth Ambassador on nearly £24k per annum. Applications are now open for the job.

Davy51
Yes Baz, there is an article on the WG webpage.
observer
... and this un-elected kid, supposed to represent the youth of Cheshire?
Bazj
This is absolutely disgraceful...... he is 23 (so hardly a kid) and should be on minimum wage.... This joker of a free-loading commissioner needs kicking out and the money spent on bobbys on the beat. He has apparently spending 700 grand a year on his staff alone!!..... observer
So we've been conned by the CONservatives, who brought this nonsense in. Problem is, will any of the other candidates next time change anything and get rid of the trough?
Antisthenes
Utter waste of £23k. Who will speak to him? I doubt the 'kids'' will. I am guessing that the commissioner's back room staff will be toiling tirelessly to maintain the status quo. What else could we spend £700k on? Has anything changed? observer
Presumably, there's less money available to support operational policing, due to the spend on this new hierarchy?
Evil Sid
Perhaps we should ask them to set up a committee to look into the police commissioners budget.
observer
.. perhaps a committee, made up of faceless Councillors and Magistrates?!
Davy51
A CQC type body ?
