So DIZZY's intuition was correct and we got lead down the CLEO path and OBS mine shaft for a while until NICK T rescused us and confessed that Mrs T is his partner and soul mate.

It just shows the twist and turns of a WWW thread.

We now know that OBS and Nick T are not married from the evidence presented before us :D and thst I'm not going to be joining CSI Warrington just yet - I need some more police training or a session with the BBC Who do you think you are?

Errm, thought he and the Unions were trying to keep the pits open; he said they were after closing 90% of them, and he was proved right. Maggie and the Tories never forgave the NUM for the embarrasment of the Heath Gov; and their sole objective was to smash the NUM, even when it meant buying coal from Poland.

Keeping the pits open would have kept us more energy self suffient.

Peter Obs is right Mr Scargill was right about how many coal mines would end up going, The Tory government were lying. Your memory is selective when it comes to the miners strike. History has proved the miners right.

Maybe I need a sabatical away from here for a while - my mind works in mysterious ways.

You don't need time away from here at all Geoff ... you just need time away from your endless accademic studies, dissertations, analyses and also to clear your councillor programmed mind. They will be programming you while you sleep you know

Clear it all out ... you just need logic and common sense... easy peasy :wink::P

Asp, since when has a workforce had the power to keep their industry operating, when they don't own it, and the intent of the owner, was to break it up for political reasons in any event. Ironically (and with hindsight), the pits could have saved us from dependency on foreign oil and gas, now that the North Sea resources have been frittered away on the benefit dependency that resulted from Maggie's massive de-industrialisation programme and dependency on the city of London.

Poland or Australia obs?

Don't you think, that when running a business, that the managers should be allowed to manage? The Unions were bleeding it dry. Something had to be done. IMO the Unions forced the issue and Thatcher grabbed the opportunity. The other side of the coin is that there was never enough investment in Industry and the money wasn't there to re-invest and modernise. Happened with most British Industry giants.

Come on Peter; whilst there was a case for modernising our industries in the face of Japanese competition; this should have meant re-investment in re-tooling and mechanisation AND R&D; which admitedly was being opposed by the more extreme ludites in Unions. However, what we got was the wholesale de-manning of our industries and services; for "political" reasons (IE to smash organised labour); first using the North Sea oil money to fund the resultant dole queues; then, when this became embarrassing; funding the transfer of the long term unemployed to dependency on incapacity benefits. Meanwhile, we had the transfer of our economic reliance to the Finance sector and the City of London. :(
