Presume "emergencies" occur everyday; however, the ability to cope appears to be lessened at week-ends, when senior staff arn't available.

Clearly emergencies happen every day - but I would expect that the ratio of emergency to non emergency admissions to be higher at weekends and therefore not be surprised if a greater number of weekend admissions pegged it.

More emergencies when people are off work than when in work.

Even if the number of emergency admissions are constant throughout the week , the number of non emergency admissions will be lower at the weekends - thefore the ratio of emergency admissions will be higher at a weekend.
