asperity
I can't get my head around your assertion that opting out is simpler than opting in Obs. At the moment to opt out you don't have to do anything!!
observer
Cos the majority of folk have no real objection, it's just that they can't be a**s'd - the minority of selfish folk, would ensure that they "opted out" - so would be a**s'd to do it. Cleopatra
How do you know the majority of people have no objection? have you asked everyone in the uk?
asperity
Cleo, didn't you know that Obs knows everything?
observer
If we had the "opt out" system, we'd soon find out, wouldn't we?!
asperity
But we haven't so we won't
Cleopatra
Observer, opt in or opt out as YOU wish but leave others to decide for themsleves. Meshie?
asperity
Quite right Cleo, it's a free country, so far. Lets just hope Obs and his like don't get their way. The thin end of the wedge.
observer
If stick with the "opt in" system, they should imo restrict transplants to those who have "opted in" - thus concentrating the minds of everyone else!

asperity
I think Obs is the one that doesn't understand.
observer
Think I understand the basic motives involved in this issue - some folk are takers and others are givers - the takers usually taking advantage of the givers. asperity
So you never give anything to anybody unless you are sure you are going to get something in return Obs?

Dizzy
Does seem a bit daft that most of us (yourself included Cleo) are happy to have bits removed and incinerated while we are alive providing they are diseased etc but are a bit twitchy about making the decision to allow them to be removed to possibly help others after our time is up and when the bodily parts are of no use to us whatsoever. Diseased parts are no use to anyone so maybe it's the psycological worry of tempting fate by agreeing to say our good parts are up for grabs one day however or whenever we may go. Cleopatra
Ok. Someone who opted out dies from some disease or other, would you want one of his organs transplanted into you anyway, even if you desperately needed it? Would you want the lungs from a heavy smoker? would you want the liver of an alcoholic? Would you want a kidney from a drug addict? So on and so forth. I think not. Its all acadmeic in the end. Cleopatra
Yep, I'm a signed up organ doner! And ther we have the nub of it! You opted in so you think everyone else should donate too. Rather like the voter who thinks because he votes everyone else should be forced to vote! Bahh humbug!
observer
Don't think it works like that Cleo; presume the medics would only use healthy organs; but even if they didn't, someone clinging to life with a dodgy liver, kidney etc, would no doubt prefer it to being dead. Think about it a bit more Dizzy, lovey, Two different aspects. And I am not twitchy, I can assure you, I just will not agree to it. Period. And observer, dont bother to say it. I've already said elsewhere in this thread, I dont want anyone elses internals inside me and would rather die anyway because I have no fear of death. asperity
Yep, I'm a signed up organ doner! That doesn't answer my question Obs  I carry an organ donor card, and as far as I'm concerned what happens to any bits of me that are any good when I die are no concern of mine. However I'm not going to set conditions about who should be a recipient. For example, say I got run over by a bus tomorrow, should a 3 year old child who needs a liver transplant be denied because he/she hasn't "opted in"? Get over yourself Obs and become a human being.
observer
... nope, I opted in, cos it's a logical course of action, not to waste organs that could save someone else's life; just hope they don't go to a career "taker"!
