0710hrs and at the last count 2 members and 34 guest's, SO COME ON YOU GUESTS OUT THERE GET YOURSELVES REGISTERED, it doesn't take long or cost anything to join this forum, you can retain your anonymity and contribute your interests and opinions to whatever level that you wish to do so, I personally find it extremely interesting to either stand back and watch some of our most ardent and long standing members sparring over the most incredulous and hysterical subjects or to become embroiled in other interesting historical topics and since joining have learned a great deal more about our towns heritage, so come on folks join up and be a part of the action instead of standing on the side lines watching.

Agree Algy, it is possible on here there really are 34 guests at the time you checked and cant understand why they dont join up. Not all people want to post great number of threads but even if they registered and just lurked that would be one step up. There would be a thread at sometime they would want to respond to and bingo they have started posting.

I administer a small local specialist forum and just recently we have had 10/11 "guests" on all day which I dont believe unless there are some silly people out there leaving a page displaying all the time.

I dont think that is the case here this being a much larger forum, but it could be.

There are some technical issues that sometimes make it look like more people are looking in than is actually the case. We noticed this a few year’s back when there were quite a lot more overseas members and it was commonplace to see the count jump by ten each time an overseas member logged in. The Original Steve and myself managed to deliberately take the visitor count well over a hundred one night, even though in reality there was only the two of us. :D

I don’t know about others but I very often log myself out but leave the PC on so in effect I become one of the visitors (lurkers) and it may well be the case for others  .

Well done Algy and if I wasn't already registered your post would have enticed me into joining. I agree with you that it would be really nice if some of the guests joined.

However sometimes the 'numbers of guests' can be misleading like Gary says.

5 minutes ago there were a lot of guests on but as you can see below that they are probably not 'normal' guests due to the fact that so many are looking at the same old topic. I collated them to make the list shorter.

11 individual guests al Viewing Topic:   Left overs?

1 guest Viewing Topic:   Best diet?

8 individual guests Viewing Topic:   Ideal picnic food

2 individual guests Viewing Topic:   Handy tips

1 guest Viewing Topic:   Gluten Free Recipes?

6 individual guest Viewing the Members List

1 guest Viewing Board Index

1 Guest 'Searching'

Many of the above guests could be spammers or spam 'bots' like Gary said....... but more often that not they are also search engine bots from places like google, yahoo etc etc who roam websites frequently (especially sites which get updated a lot like this one) to get any new info and to see what's going on to keep their search engine uptodate and to make websites such as this more findable.

It's not always like this though as a lot of the time it will be real people (guests) who are actually interested in what's being said and are reading, so I hope they do join now they have read your very warm welcome Algy :)

Unfortunately Dizzy not everyone is like you as from what I can see Algy's appeal has not generated one new member yet! :(

From many years experience most people join because they have a particular issue they want to sound off about - then after a brief rant thery disappear, with a small number becoming regulars.

Occasionally they pop back for another rant and then go back in hibernation. :|

Garry, I joined because at the time it seemed to be a nice social place to be, call me naive if you like but I still believe it is a nice place to be I can sit here, as I am now in a comfy chair, nice and warm and communicate with other human beings, for me ranting never entered the equation although if you look at one of my early replies I believe I called 'obs' and 'lt' a "couple of squabbling fishwives", pretty strong language for me, so if 'ranting' is a reason for some to join then let those stay on the outside as 'Guests'.

Yeah.... welcome to the forum Rex Mac :D

I recon Algy can mark you as a success as you have only just posted so makes no difference whether you registered yesterday.

Don't prove Gary right by posting a few times and then disappearing though... we are counting on you now so no pressure honest ha ha.

Let's see if our two new guests are still posting in a few eeks - I hope so - and Algy lose one of the r's out of GARY please! :!:

And Gary, put a 'w' before eeks please (lol). I've already said I was a secretary and pick up on typos like this! Just joking! (Is that too forward for a newbie?) :)

Hey look at this that I’ve just seen on another forum I post on.

Registered users: Bing [bot], Google [bot], LongshanksED, Yahoo [bot]

I knew about these robotic things (bots) that log onto web sites to check what’s going on but I’ve never seen them as registered members before!
