asperity
The idea of "privatising" the energy market was to increase competition and thus reduce prices; added to which they introduced a regulator, which todate has proved totally ineffective. And how are prices going to go down while the government is forcing the energy companies to become collectors of stealth tax i.e. the Renewable Energy Obligation
Lt Kije
The prices have been going up for years, long before the stealth tax, that just gives them more of an excuse to charge even more
observer
Think we need to look at their profits - AFTER TAX?!

Peter T
WAIT until the other players make their move, and then you make yours. WHY are these companies allowed to do what they want? Politicians? Shoot the bloody lot.
Dizzy
simples Peter... they have the power over something that we all need. It's not like we can all pop down to the local shop, ebay or other sources to buy our electric/gas is it. Maybe the whole country should just all unplug and switch off for a week just for spite. We've managed in our caravan and tents in the past with no real need for gas or electric so why not. What's one week eh... but it's a heck of a lot to them if loads do it
observer
No doubt Asp is correct in his assertion, but the Energy Co's are saying that wholesale prices have increased - so why don't they tell us how/why/who has caused this? Are we now depended on Russian or someone else's gas - yet another arguement for coal and energy self sufficiency.
