Wireless
Asperity, And STILL people will vote for them!!!One day, folk might realise that voting power can be used to keep them focussed, by occasionally voting a party out of office. Â But, because folk don't bother, governments can do what they want. Â But people won't vote for them.Labour will lose the election, the Tories will get in and in ten years time the Tories will be voted out and Labour will get back in.The policies will hardly change.Voting a party out of office won't change the fundamental problem that voting simply changes the personalities without changing policy. Wireless
Think you'll find, that those countries with the bigger social inequalities, have the largest prison populations. Â Almost certainly true.In many countries it is largely the poor and mentally ill who end up behind bars at the behest of the middle and ruling class. That's not to say many people don't deserve to be behind bars-they do. How many people we can lock up is something of a political contest. Correct, but if they only had 5 years to get it right if they wanted to stay in power, they might get their act together. Now there is an assumption that they are there for 10 minimum, so can promise anything without necessarily delivering. I just feel that something needs to change. Since Maggie wrecked the Unions, Police et al, things have been chugging along going round in circles. Even the smaller parties don't seem to be fighting the fight. observer
If the Tories get in, we'll have mass unemployment as they cut public services, and a double dip recession - mark my words.

asperity
If Labour get in we'll have mass unemployment, double dip recession etc. Come on Obs you can do better than cheap shots at the Tories
asperity
Incidentally there's very sparse evidence that we have actually come out of recession never mind the double dip!!
observer
It's THE fundemental difference between Tory and Labour, and most economists. To rush to balance the books now (whilst being an admirable long term objective) would seriously impede any recovery. This has happened in Japan, where they've not recovered properly for the past 20 years. So you don't order the patient out of the hospital immediatley following his operation, he requires care and medicine (fiscal stimuli) until he's fit to walk. observer
60, against 20 for the Tory proposal: but that's not my point: there is a fundemental difference of opinion; and voters will have a choice between the two schools of thought in May - so they will only be able to blame themselves if they make the wrong choice. Eagle
The only problem with that Obs, is the "I always vote XXXXXXX" brigade who aren't bothered about plans or proposals and who vastly outvote the ones who take time to ponder the different approaches. asperity
Haven't alot of economists wrote to a paper saying the labour plan is better than the Tory one  An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn't happen today.
