observer
Not short of referendums in Switzerland - seems they've voted to ban minerets being built onto mosques - real democracy in action or not?
Bazj
voted for by a majority of people in a country where democracy counts. Nothing to do with racism and all about not wanting their country to be overly influenced by Islam.
inky pete
I got this one through by e-mail just the other day. "I just applied for planning permission for a new-build house. It was going to be 100ft tall and 400ft wide with nine turrets at various heights and windows all over the place. It would have parking for 200 cars and I was going to paint it snot green. The council told me to f*** off. So I sent in the application again, but this time I called it a Mosque. Building work starts on Monday." Evil Sid
i am surprised at that. i would have thought that parking for 200 cars would have been considered inadequate
harry hayes
Islamic money to Berne. Think I agree with the gist of the thread, but could we - mostly ungodly people - just be a little intolerant of people who apparently have faith. Happy days
observer
No probs with folk doing things in the privacy of their own home, in a secular society religion shouldn't be "in your face" - if we were starting from scratch, I'd include church steeples too! Paul Kennedy
I understand that Saudi Arabia has banned Cuckoo Clocks.....although stopped short of banning Rolex watches...... and Swiss numbered bank accounts Weren't the Swiss, bankers to the Nazi Party. On a serious note it is interesting that a Referendum was chosen to decide this matter, rather than a change in planning laws to ban minarets. observer
The Swiss use referenda a lot - and it seems a necessary format given the wide gulf that exists between people and their political class.
