kevofaz25
On her maiden call to Liverpool tomorrow- arrives 11am and leaves (with all the usual Cunard glitz and fireworks) at 11pm. At the Cruise Ship Terminal near the Liver Building.
Bill
That'd be good to see. My son living at New Brighton usually has a granstand view of such events but he's here for a few days at the moment so he'll be gutted when I tell him about this. inky pete
Might just pop along to see that. Although it'll mean driving back from work in Speke to pick up Mrs. Inky before heading right back again!!

LymmParent
Ooooh, that "boat" thing never misses the mark, does it?
Bazj
.....just a big posh ferry then really!!
asperity
It just annoys me the way that the British can't use their own language properly
LymmParent
I think you're allowed to say "ferry". It's "boat" that turns sailors puce, cos if you're officially nautical, that refers to submarines. All a load of ship to me, but there you go.... asperity
If you want to generalise then use "vessel"
wolfie
It just annoys me the way that the British can't use their own language properly If the word 'boat' hit a sore point then I used the word properly

LymmParent
Yeah, but knowingly tormenting the nautical faction is damned good fun too!

Bazj
If you want to generalise then use "vessel" Didnt CheKhov in Star Trek once call it a Wessel??
LymmParent
Whatever floats your "boat" Ooooh, I bet it hurt you to post that one!! Can you "float" a boat? I thought they "surfaced".... but I've always wondered what the right word is for the things you get into when a ship sinks, you know, life.... thingies. Cos they can't be lifeBOATS, can they?
asperity
Well funnily enough you can have lifeboats, and in fact most ships have to have them by law. As for submarines I believe they are floating even when they're submerged (something to do with Archimede's principle)
wolfie
Apparantly a ship is called a ship if it's big enough to carry a boat. While a boat is called a boat if it's small enough to be carried on a ship.
asperity
Unless that boat is a huge great nuclear submarine
Evil Sid
if a submarine is sat on the bottom of the ocean is it still floating? if ignorance is bliss then i must be the most blissful person in Warrington as an aside. if submarine means under the water then would supermarine over the water
asperity
If a submarine is sat on the bottom it is not floating, it is aground Supermarine Spitfire? Definitely above the water in flight. If it were to land on the water it would soon become a Submarine Spitfire
LymmParent
As for submarines I believe they are floating even when they're submerged (something to do with Archimede's principle) Well, if I was on any other kind of vessel that was submerged, I'd certainly not consider it to be floating..... I'd be quite tempted to used the word "sunk" and insist on leaving. Funny lot, you sailors...... too much rigging definitely affects the balance of the mind!!
