Don't think "the British Empire" was about intentional "unification", merely the results of colonial wars in pursuit of cheap resources. :? Interesting take on the early use of "free trade", since you mention the Brit Empire: China - always a huge (population) market, was deliberately traded "opium" by the Brits, in order to create an economic dependency, that would facilitate "trade". Japan - after centuries of isolationism; was opened up to "free trade" by the USA (Commodore Perry) , using gunboat diplomacy.:wink:

Observer to be honest I actually agree with you on food but for different reasons, why should we import food from Africa when they can not even feed themselves, and why are the growing flowers to import to us when they should be growing food.

But thats where it ends, I want to be able to buy the best product for me at the best price

I hear a lot of banter about British jobs for British citizens and I hear the tinkle of distant alarm bells. Economic stress in the 20th century was a breeding ground for nationalism. If nationalism takes hold we have some near recent learning to at least warrant reflection on its consequences (not least for Britain who has been in decline ever since). Remember a nationalist is not the same a patriot. The nationalist is a scared, unpredictable creature whose circle of prejudice gets ever larger as the economic stress increases. Before long his prejudice spans not only peoples outside of his own nationality but sub-sets within it. Malthusian theory starts to sound sensible and right and before long he can justify any measure. Extreme nationalism in a melting pot like Britain has thankfully never taken root we are a bleating lot but at heart we have an in built relief valve. And the next time you feel nationalistic when viewing a Polish immigrant cleaning your public convenience give a thought to his ancestors, many of whom were actively involved in out finest hour the last time a country thought national socialism was a good idea.

The problem with the Poles, is that they invaded the building industry

Makes a nice change them invading rather than being invaded. Do I recall the German building industry being invaded by Brits a few years back. Oh but that is different. Our industry was in collapse and we could not feed our families....er hang on...where have I heard that?

Get real. You do not think about the feelings of a bit of bum cleavage when your family lives like dogs and your kids have nothing to eat.

Apparently someone has now pointed out that in Wales some jobs are advertising that applicants must have GCSE Welsh; it keeps the English and every other bugger else out!!

We have foreigners brought in to do jobs which unemployed skilled British workers can do - in the name of free movement in the EU, of course.

Recently, a Jobs Fair was held in Manchester Town Hall which was for non-whites only - in the name of diversity, of course.

Harridan Hardperson has introduced legislation which allows discrimination against white Christian heterosexuals - in the name of equality, of course.

This government is at war with its own people, in the name of globalisation and multiculturism, of course.

I wonder how this country managed so successfully before all this.

Can Traitors Gate bear the weight of all these treasonous politicians?

Aren't both examples illegal, and serious criminal offences.

Somebody "in the know", was telling me that when Labour changes its Leader, the above mentioned woman/person  is likely to become their new Leader.
