Email data spying !?!

From March an EC directive will come into force where all internet service providers (ISP) will have to keep data about all emails sent and received in the UK for a year. :? ....and the Government will reportedly have to pay the ISPs more than ?25 million to ensure the new law is obeyed.

Good or bad idea? Pros/Cons ? A waste of money or What happens if your email address is hacked ?

What I don't get is that if only the timing and number of each individual email communication is being stored and not according to them the actual content then what's the point.

The Home Office said the data would be useful for combating crime.... so surely those committing crimes will just use another methods of communication :roll:

It's no different really from the telecoms companies having to keep records of which phone numbers have called which other numbers. Obviously they can't record all calls and keep details of the actual conversation, but a record of the fact that person X has been calling person Y and when can still be very useful to law enforcement.

Currently, e-mail is just about the most annonymous method of communication available to criminals. This legislation is designed to make it less so.

wonder how they get on with mine.

home email job sites, virgin media, game sites occasionally and a shop i once bought some cloths for my uncle from.

secondary email at msn game sites and back up emails from my home address i want to keep.

tertiary email address at yahoo. occasional game sites, about a hundred emails about viagra-banking scams-lottery wins-free microsoft software etc.

sent emails from any of the three about a dozen a year.

i can understand them wanting to monitor certain emails but with cyber cafes how do they know who sent what to whom. like trying to find out where the light went when the candle goes out

Inky... I understand your point about phone calls but would expect that is a lot easier to monitor.

Evil Sid.... goods points also and like you I can log onto any of my different email adresses from virtually any PC (or other source available) anywhere in the world  So how would they track me.

I have four PC's in the house at the moment and one of them is a newer laptop that will happily just search for any available wireless network to connect to if it's taken outside. It's not mine but I could easily create an email address via your unsecured network and would you know? Logging the IP addresses of a particular PC is a waste of time too as I can, if I have access, go onto anyones PC and set myself up with a new email address then use it on any PC I want to.

Obviously if you are subscribed to an ISP like Virgin, AOL etc then after you sign up you will get a master email address which presumably is linked to your home address and all other sub-email addresses you create will be likewise.

Yahoo, MSN and other free email accounts.. well there's not many checks there from what I can see.

Anyway I guess as most of my emails are to/from family, friends or are work related then I have nothing really to worry about but I will feel like I'm being spied on.... no more funny clips about Gordon Brown I guess just incase :shock::lol:

I thought that they could do this anyway, if they had their suspicions.

I think that these things have moved away from "nothing to hide " points of view, and are now more Big Brother and control.

It's time that people stopped looking at things separately, and took stock of all the "controls" that have been put in place and those that are planned.

Peter, you are absolutely correct in what you say.

The Labour lot will of course accuse you of being paranoid and the "Nothing to hide" banner is always used by those eager to hike more control over us.

In fact, just by typing and posting this; I am probably more of a wanted man than Osama Bin laden!

If you've got nothing to hide you've got nothing to worry about! Hopefully help catch some of those sickos out there!

It's not about having nothing to hide Gary... it's about infringement of human rights and feeling that you are being tracked and monitored even though you are doing nothing wrong, especially for those of us who are law abiding citizens.

We all know you can monitor us here on Warr WW Forum and that know our email addresses, Log on Id's, IP addresses etc etc but that is because we have willingly chosen to join your forum and as such have given you the right to access and monitor us.

At the click of a button you can see every post I have ever made, where I have made it from, when I have logged on/off, how long I have been on for, which pages I have looked at and in which order, the route I took to get to your site, and the IP address of the PC or server I have used to access you blah blah blah...... but like I said I have chosen to give you that power

Do you have access to the content of all our personal messages (PM's) :?:

I expect that some sickos will be put off their email/internet passtimes due to the fact that they know they are being monitored which is good but the more knowleagble low lifes of society will just find a way around it all.

And that is why these intrusions into our private lives are wrong.

It will NOT stop the sicko's or the terrorists or the criminals.

It is an excuse, paying lip-service to the prevention of the above, to further the control of people along with ID cards, DNA and so on.

WHAT will it cure? :?

Spoken like a true newspaper man

Having nothing to hide is very different than having my private correspondence shifted through by a man in a cheap suit and PVC shoes.

Welcome to UK open prison.

It's getting such that everything you do can be monitored and assessed without your knowledge.

At least with good old snail mail you don't have to write on the outside of the envelope who the sender is and it is a criminal offence to tamper with mail in the post. Any security service would have to already be suspicious about who the letter was sent to in order to start opening all their mail.

Imagine the uproar if they started opening all the mail to record who sent what to whom! Imagine the cost! You would also be able to tell if someone had opened it aswell.

I think with email it's a case of they can do it behind the scenes without people knowing, so they think it's okay to do it. Yet we wouldn't stand for it with snail mail!

Terrorists will have to go back to using letters dropped off in isolated post boxes.

Or get a pigeon loft.
