Jones was born and brought up in Chester, the daughter of the late Robert Edward Jones and the late Mary Scanlan.[2]

 

Jones was educated at St Werburgh's Primary School and Ursuline Convent in Chester. She graduated with a BA from University College London and a MEd from the University of Liverpool. She also holds qualifications from the former Chester College and Manchester Metropolitan University.

 

Before entering Parliament, Jones had an established political career as a local councillor, serving on Chester City Council from 1984-1991. She was unsuccessful in her initial attempts to move beyond local government, contesting the Lancashire Central constituency at the 1984 European Parliament election, and North Shropshire and Ellesmere Port and Neston at the 1983 and 1987 general elections. However, in 1997, she was selected as the Labour Party candidate for Warrington North and the subsequent General Election saw her achieve victory with 62.1% of the vote.

 

Alongside her political career, Jones has been employed as an English teacher, a solicitor, a development officer with the mental health charity MIND and a justice and peace officer with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool.

 

 

Born in Preston, Southworth was educated at the former Larkhill Convent Grammar School (now called Cardinal Newman College, a sixth form college) on Larkhill Road in Frenchwood, Preston. In 1978, she graduated with a BA in English Literature from Lancaster University.

 

Before entering Parliament, Southworth was a councillor on St Helens Borough Council, on which she became chairperson of the Leisure Committee. She unsuccessfully contested the Wirral South constituency at the 1992 General Election. She was a Director at Age Concern in St Helens.

 

Southworth was selected to stand for election for Labour through an all-women shortlist. This method of selection was subsequently declared illegal in January 1996 as it breached sex discrimination laws,[1] Despite the ruling she remained in place as the candidate for the following year's election. She served as a member of the House of Commons select committees on Trade and Industry (1998-2001) and Procedure (1997-1999). She was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Paul Boateng, the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, from 2001 to 2005. In 2005 she was appointed a member of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, which will scrutinise the implementation of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

 

She has served as a non-executive director on a number of bodies, including the charity Age Concern, Grosvenor Housing Association and Merseyside and Knowsley Health Authority.

 

At the Women in Public Life Awards in 2008 Southworth was named MP of the year for her work involving missing and runaway children.

Safety and legal issues such as driver of taxi number 1** (you can have the full number if you like) sat in his car the other night smoking despite the no smoking signs all over his windows and the fact that it is also illegal to smoke in your place of work?
