observer
Millions of folk have/are being killed in the Congo, with 17,000 UN troops in situ - so what use are they if they can't or are not allowed to enforce peace?
observer
More millions are dying in Darfur and Zimbawe; all we get is hand wringing from western politicians and the UN; so what can/should we be doing about it?
Peter T
It gives the "nice" people the feel-good factor, knowing that the UN are saving the world. Either get rid of the UN or give it some teeth and where-withall to stop the problems they are sent to "observe". The voting system needs amending to a majority vote on decision-making instead of any country stopping the process by saying no.
Davy51
Does make you wonder if a more worthwhile function of the UN could have prevented yesterdays tragic road accident to Morgan Tsangurai & his wife where the oncoming lorry driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Apparently tragic "road accidents" are a useful tool in ridding the Mugabe regime of political opponents.
Eagle
No oil in Darfur or Mugabeland.
observer
Bit of a catch 22: the veto on the security Council is reserved for the big five, without who's co-operation you couldn't get anything done anyway. Conversely, if democracy within the UN is widened and made more meaningfull, the big super-powers might find themselves losing out, plus every tin pot nation would be "looking after jack" in any case and voting accordingly. Africa sees these institutions as "white man's" vehicles, thus every corrupt African Leader who are syphoning aid off to their own bank accounts in Switzerland, ain't going to support an attack on Mugabe, in case they are next.
