Bigger Blue bins!!!!

Bigger Blue bins!!!

Leaflet pushed through letterbox today, informing me that next month WBC will give us a blue bin the size of the black ones and remove the bin used for paper collection.

Then I read the rest of the leaflet.

I will no longer have to take my recycling to the tip or nearest station, as all I have to do is put ALL my recycling stuff in this Blue bin, and it will be collected for me.

Fine so far.

the bit I thought was crazy, was the fact that they will employ people to do what I do for free. And that is to sort it out.

CRAZY or wot? :twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted:

I don't know why they don't just provide sacks for the recyclable rubbish. I know of at least 3 areas where sacks are provided for plastic and paper and a divided bin for glass and tin. It works for them so why not WBC?

Very good point Peter although not everyone is a good as you for recylcing their waste. I must admit I am probably one of them.

KatyOF.... I like that idea.

As for the new larger blue bins I'm dreading them simply because of lack of space.

I'm actually looking forward to, and more than happy to, sort my waste appropriately but at the moment I have a large black bin and a small blue bin which already take up valuable space in our terrace house yard but unlike other residents I don't leave mine out all week  The thought of two large bins is not a happy one

We opted out of the large green bin as we don't have a garden(when I say opted out I caught the bloke dropping them off and told him to look at our paved yard and front garden and to tell me why he thought I actually needed one ... ) Our blue bin never gets filled so we rarely put it out for emptying as most of our paper is recycled within the month for use re-used in our guinea pig hutch etc.

So if we are now to split our rubbish between a recyling blue and general black bin then I recon I actually only two bins of the smaller size. That would be great as they would not take up as much room either.

Is there an option for two smaller bins ?

Another question is that what will happen if the wrong type of rubbish is placed in either the black or new blue bins... will they not get emptied as sometimes happens with the current blue paper bins :?

As I said I'm not against the idea at all but would it would be nice to be given a choice of size and also I am concerned about the number of unused and unwanted bins that may be left out in the streets for ever and a day by people who have no intention of using them  We have enough around here already :(

Apparently so Obs.

I wonder why they didn't just tell people to use their existing blue bins for ALL recyclable material for a few months to see if the bigger ones are actually necessary :?

Dismayed.

There must be for the black bins.

get in touch with the council and ask them to replace it.

There is a smaller version that single or elderly have.

I welcome the new bins wholeheartedly because..

I?m fed up of tripping over bags and boxes of junk stored up in the shed.

I?m also fed up of filling the car with the stuff only to find all the bins full at the recycling centre then having no room for the shopping.

I?m also fed up that I can?t get to the local tip because of the long queues caused by people who park up then spend ages sorting and depositing their general household recyclables there.

It?s all very well calling the council for spending money when your prepared do it free but the vast majority of people don?t think that way and if the council has to meet strict recycling targets then this has to be the correct way of doing things. Ok, it?s probably going to put our council taxes up slightly but if that?s what it takes to solve the problem then we just have to accept it.

Heres how the Germans do it and it works well

Recyclealbe plastic, ect in a yellow plastic bag

Paper/cardboard in the blue bin

Compostable in the Brown bin

Normal household rubbish in the Grey bin

All of the above are picked up on a two week basis and not all bins at once..

Glass to the Bottle bank

Large Itme sofa?s ect to the tip you can have it picked up free but can take upto 6 weeks(normal is two weeks)

Well that?s exactly the same only different.

My only concern is that by retaining the large grey bin for the small amount of grungy stuff, it won?t be long before someone changes their minds and decides these will only be emptied fortnightly.

I don?t know about others but we recycle as much as possible (within reason) but I would have thought that the small blue bin would have been perfectly good enough for a couple of weeks worth of recycleables without the need for costly replacement bins.

Thanks for the info Peter. I didn't know we had a choice as they just appear.

Will I get a reduction in my council tax if I can use two bins half the size of everyone elses :D

We've bin here before; but it might help, IF the Government attacked the source of the problem, the super-markets and packaging industry!

I have it on good authority that the small blue bins are to be collected and sent as part of an aid package to Africa where they will be distibuted to various Pygmy tribes. In the past tribes such has the Bungamawatters and the Umphacoes have had problems with locals falling into the large black bins and because they are of small stature they are unable to climb out ! In one extreem case recently a Mr Dobongo from the Umphacoe tribe was found wandering around Arpley Meadows in a confused state.

Apparently he had fallen into a black bin , was unable to escape , and was duly processed along with the waste. The waste was then transported in large canoes along the Congo river across the ocean to Liverpool and then to Arpley land fill site. A journey of some 4 thousand miles ! When questioned about accepting waste from abroad a WBC spokesman replied " Whats the problem with that ? Its common practise and anyway It dosent affect me , I live in Wigan "

Mr Dobongo decided to remain in Britain and is now a well known window cleaner who specialises in bungalows !!

Problem solved, just throw all your rubbish in one big bin to be collected every week, taken to the docks put on a ship, dump it in Germany and leave them to sort it

No need to appologise Obs.

After extensive investigations it has been revealed that the aforementioned black bin was in fact one of the old Manchester bins which was originally fitted with steps on the outside for ease of scavenging ! This type of bin has now been withdrawn from use in the Manchester area due to the amount of injuries suffered by the general public and the rise in " injury claims " :D
